RANGIORA. A children's plain and fancy dreas dance, held in the Parish Hall, in aid of the Anglican bazaar funds, was well attended, and those present thoroughly enjoyed themselves. ROTHERHAM. The Hawarden ladies' hockey team visited Rolherham and played a friendly game with the Kotherham team at the local domain. An enjoyable game ' resulted in a win for Kotherham by 8' goals to 0. The Eev. E. B. Moore was referee. The hockey competition matches will be resumed next Saturday, when Kotherham will play Kaikoura, at Kaikoura. Last weelc-end the Kotherham School Committee held their last hare drive for the season: There were fourteen guns, and a bag-of seventy-two hares was the result of a pleasant day's sport. ■ Owing to inclement weather, recent practices of the Amuri Players have had to be,cancelled, but it is hoped the attendance will improve with a view to staging a production in the near future. HANMER SPRINGS. A public meeting of- residents was hold on 'Monday last to consider what steps should be taken to raise, funds to equip the newly-formed Volunteer Fire Brigade. There was a fair attendance. After discussion it was decided to hold a fauov dress ball, and a bring aud buy sale. A committee, consisting of the chairman, Messrs JAshton, J. Hay, F. Malaquin, R. Nicholls. R. Kennedy, and H. Roche was elected to cany out-the arrangements. CHEVIOT. There was a good attendance at a meeting of the Cheviot branch of the Farmers' Union, over which th© president (Mr W. Hughes) presided. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr P. SCARGILL. The. fortnightly euclue and dance evening h'eld by the Scargill Young People's.'Qlub was again well. patronised. ' The prizes were won-by Mrs Geo., Tomlinson and Mr G., Garrett. Mr Lainbie was M.C., and Mr L. Fairbairn supplied the'music. . The winners of the button competition at the, Miniature Rifle Club's weekly shoot were A. Stewart and 8. Pannett. A. teams match, married versus single, resulted-in a win for the'single men by a substantial majority. A return match will be fired-this evening. MOTUNAU. Thero is general regret throughout tb& district by reason of the passing of Mr H.-D. McKay, who died at Waikari Public Hospital last Friday morning. Mr McKay was, for the last five years, head shepherd on "Tipapa"—Mr H Acton-Adams's estate He was a most capable stockman, and his quiet and unassuming manner, together with his knowledge of stock breeding and raising, had earned him the respect and esteem of everybody. Much sympathy is'.felt for his widow and family of two sons and two daughters. _ A very pleasant party *as held at Mr and Mrs R. M. Gibb's residence, "Heatbfield," when a number of young people were their guests. The granary provided an excellent floor for dancing and was prettily decprated. WHARANUI. The football' match between the teams from the North and South ends of the line has been the chief topic of conversation for the past week here. It occasioned no surprise to see over 100 enthusiasts journey to Kaikoura for the match. The junior match resulted in a win for the Wharanui team by sto nil. W. McKenzie scored a try. which was converted. The 4. team's game was a hard one, the scores being 6 all. Wharanui scored twice, and Parnassus got one try and a penalty goal. E. Vissendon and S. McGreel scored for Wharanui. A football match is to be played at an early date between Kaikoura and Kekerangu, at Kekerangu.

OXFORD. The annual re-union of Oxford District High School old pupils was held in the Oxford Town Hall. when there was a very large attendance. Th© evening's entertainment consisted ot games, dances, competitions, etc., and suppe*" was provided by tho secondary pupils. Victor Clark, on behalf of the school, welcomed the ex-pupils, on whose behalf Miss Elsie Russell responded. An apology was received for the absence of Mr L. Watson, a former headmaster. Short addresses were given by Mr A. Bringans (headmaster), and Mr H. C. I>. Somerset (secondary assistant). : With th© advent of the lambing season farmers are perturbed by the num. ber of wandering dogs which have begun to work havoc among the flocks. One farmer, who had five ewes with seven lambs in a sheltered paddock on Friday night, discovered on Saturday morning that six of the lambs had been killed. The lambs had not been mauled, but had been bitten over the loins. CHORLTON LITTLE AKALOA.

There was a large attendance at the hall, when the filial for the second .aggregate prize was played. The prize was a 56ib tin of honey, given by Mr C. Craw. Mrs L. , Waghorn was the winner, with 79 pointa, Mr Jagger being second, with 76. The monthly meeting of the Women's Institute was not quite so well attended this month, when Mrs L. Waghorn and Mrs Cunningham were the hostesses at the former's home. A comprehensive programme . for the ' ensuing six months was arranged. A vote was taken on a* display of articles, "something new from something old." Mrs L. Waghorn gained, most points. After tea a "memory" competition was held, Mrs R. E. Waghorn being the winner, with Miss Mavis Salt, second. • Tho annual parish meeting (which had been delayed owing to the serious illness of the secretary, Mr C. E. Kay) was held in the hall, the Rev. On Saturday evening, in the Public Hall, the Sports Club continued their series of dances. The weekly sewing meetings held m the lounge room of the Memorial Hall, in connexion with the gala to be held' in October to raise funds for the construction of. swimming baths, are being wel] attended, aud good work, is being done for the various , _®' Several gift afternoons have been held, and a varied collection of articles has been received.

LEESTON. The sixth annual meeting of the Leeston Methodist Circuit Ladies' Guild was held in the Dunsandel Church, the Bev. G. P. Hunt presiding. The report referred to the, efforts made on behalf of the Solomon . Islands mission, the Methodist Orphanage, and of the entertainment of the Maori. Mission party. The chief items:of expenditure had been £23 14s 7d, to the Orphanage, and. £26 for parsonage furnishings. A small, credit balance was in hand. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs G. P. Hunt; vice-presidents: Mesdames T. W. Brooks, John Heslop, A. Tong, and H. W. Johnson; secretary, n.. Doak; treasurer, Mrs Jos. Brooks; quarterly Board representative, Mrs A. E. firown. , . A party from Southbridge, organised by Mr G,. B. ' Couch, gave a concert at Doyleston for the benefit of the Methodist Sunday School. The Rev. G. to heart failure, due to angina pectoris and fatty degeneration of the heart. • The funeral of the late Petuere Maihi took place at the Little River Maori Cemetery yesterday, and largely attended. Petuere Maihi a native of the North Island,' but had lived in the Little River district nearly all his life. 'Ht was a well-known footballer in the early days, a»d an enthusiast in. the game up to the lastHe is survived-by a widow and two children. The sudden death of Mrs katberine Skipper, which occurred, at" the Christchurch Hospital, last week, cast quw s a doom over the district. Mrs Skipper was the wife of Mr J. of the-staff of the New Zealand ly ways, and was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Geo,- Robinson, of Little River, and a sister to:Toby,'Tom,. ana the late George Robinson. She is survived :by her husband and a of eight children, the youngest cmld being four weeks old.
