SMART'S POND.
NOW "BRADFORD PARE." CITY COUNCIL NOT UNANIMOUS. Regarding its recommendation that the name of Smart's Pond Beserve should be changed to Bradford Park as a mark of appreciation of the services rendered to the City by the late Cr. F. E. Cooke, the Abattoir, Markets, and Reserves Committee reported to the City Council last night that it had b:en ascertained that the name suggested had previously been approved by Cr. Cooke. The committee pointed out that the name Bradford Park would serve to perpetuate his memory to a greater extent than an> other name, in consequence of which the committee desired to recommend its previous decision to the Council. Cr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., said that he was disappointed that his suggestion that the area should be known as the Cooke Memorial Park had not been taken up. An Amendment. Cr. H. T. J. Thacker moved, as an amendment to the clause, that the area should be named the Cooke Memorial Park, and Cr. A. E. Armstrong "seconded the amendment. Cr, Armstrong said that Cr. Cooke had betto abused, but to-day the residents of the district realised what he had done for them, and for the City. The Mayor's Appeal. The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer): May I make an appeal! It would be a disastrous thing if the Council was divided over this matter. It is really an historical fact that the securing pr this area for the City was not due to Cr. Cooke. The prime mover was ex-Cr. Manhire. Cr. Cooke had the land laid out, but did not actually secure it for the City. Personally, I should be delighted to see the area called the 'Cooke Memorial Park," but if it were not for Cr. Cooke and his memory it would not have been railed "Bradford Parle." There ig really no need to came any park in the Citv "Bradford Park.'' But to use that name was to do honour to Cr. Cooke's memcry. "Opinion is divided, and under the circumstances we should alj agree, Can. not Cr. Thacker accept that!" asked the Mayor. Refusal to Withdraw. Cr. Thacker: No, I will adhere to my amendment. * n,« Cr * u' Butterfield: lam sorry that this ehould be discussed. I will have to vot» for the name "Cooke Memorial park." . Cr. J.
