BRITISH MATCH AT TIMARU.
DR. ADAMS'S REMARKS. RESENTMENT EXPRESSED AT ASHBURTON. Strong resentment was expressed at the allegations made by Dr. Adams (president of the New Zealand Rugby Union), at Wanganui last week, concerning rough play in the match between tho British team and the Combined Ashburton, South Canterbury, and North Otngo team at Timaru last month i at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union last night; Members were indignant with regard to the accusation made concerning an Ashburton player in the team. After some discussion it was decided to take the matter in opon meeting.
The president (Mr S. H. Sullivan) said that in view of the allegations the Union had circularised tho four Ashburton players in tho team, asking them for their version of the match. Only ono reply had so far been received. This was read in committee.
It was reported that two other players were preparing statements. Mr J. C. C. McLachlan: I think wo should strongly resent the imputations made by Dr. Adams, and he should be asked to name tho Ashburton player to whom he referred.
Mr H. J. Qhapman said that Dr. Adams was only in the position of a spectator, the same as several membors of the Ashburton Union.
Mr D. Heenan said ho was very surprised that a man in the position of Dr. Adams should make such statements about the play. They were nothing but slanders. He Bhould be asked where he obtained his information concorning an ex-New Zealand boxer. Mr McLachlan: If tho ropOrt about a player biting in the match was true, he had every justification for biting. Mr Chapman: If the whole facts of the match were made public they would not reflect credit /on the British team.
Mr R. H. Biggar moved that a letter be sent to the New Zealand Rugby Union taking tho strongest exception to the remarks of Dr. Adams concerning the match at Timaru, and asking that, in justice to the local playors, Dr. Adams bo requested to make specific charges against the players, and that he either substantiate them or mako an unreserved withdrawal.
The motion was carried unanimously. Mr H. Barney said that they should insist on the Ashburton players giving tho necessary statements, as they would probably bo required before the matter was settled. All Ashburton people who had read the allegations were disgusted. It was decided to request tho other three Ashburton players to furnish statements. It was resolved to request the New Zealand Rugby Union to enquire from Dr. Adams the source of his information that one Ashburton player should not have been allowed to take the field.
Mr Heenan said that at a later stago something would also come before the Union about an interference so far ns the selection of the Combined team was concerned. He understood that one of the selectors of the team had been approached in an endeavour to cut ont some of the Ashburton players from tho Combined team. Thoy should get at the root of tho matter. Rugby referees. MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. "I think the reporters at Lancaster Park are in the wrong position to do a match," said Mr W. B. Fuller, president of the Canterbury Rugbv Referees' Association, at a meeting of tho Association held last evening, when criticisms of referees' decisions published in Christchurch papers were being discussed. "When thoy were at half way they had a much better view. It is a pity they cannot bo placed where they could see better," ho added. , ~ „ In reply to a letter from tho Canterbury Association, tho Wellington Association wrote stating that it was not practicable to arrange a maton between teams from the Canterbury and Wellington Associations, to be playea at Wellington on the date of the fourth Test match with Britain. It migut bo possible to arrange a match on a later date. The letter was received. The question of tho initial infringement on a forward oass was mentioned by Mr L. Hardie, who maintained that there could be no such thing. He thought that some referees ruled as if such an infringement were possible. Mr Fuller explained that if the man who took the forward pass was in front of the man who passed when he took it then a free kick should be allowed. If'the man taking the pass was ortgmallv behind but ran up to take the forward pass then a scrum should be given. If the oass was intercepted, or if the man off-side refused to take it, then there was no need to stop tne Vhere was a large attendance of members, Mr W. B. Fuller was in tho chair.

INTER-*VARSITY MATCH. OTAGO V. CANTERBURY. The annual match between the Universities of Otago and Canterbury will take place at Lancaster Park to-morrow, commencing at 1.15 p.m. The Blues have been noted for many years aB players of sparkling Rugby, and have a record for open play unrivalled in New Zealand. Just at the present moment are playing up to their usual high standard, in Bpite of tho fact that they are not at tho top of the competition ladder. Tho team suffered injuries early in the season, from which they are only now recovering, and from their recent displays it would seem that they are still a force to be reckoned with. The game between the rivals is always very keen when played in Christchurch, the local 'Var* sity having won tho last three games played here. The Maroons arc just now playing very bright, as their recent defeat of Christchurch witnesses. Their forwards are likely to dominate the play, but fast Otago backs will have a say in things. INTER-FIRM MATCH. WIN FOR PYNE, GOULD, GUINNESS, LTD. On# of the most enjoyable inter-firm Rugby matches of the season is that between Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., and Dalgety and Co., and this year's match played at the Show Grounds yesterday afternoon was a splendid exhibition—ono of the best since the commencement of the annual series. Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., won by 6 points to 3—two tries to a try. This is the first win in three years for Pyne, Gould, Guinness. There was a large attendance of members of tho staffs _ of each firm and their friends. At half-time afternoon tea was served. The teams were: — Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd. (White) —D. W. Benson, B. T. Miller, J. L. Powell, O. D. Pratt, H. R. E scott, T. Beckett, G. S. Stevens, C. V. Richie, M. O'Donell, K. R. Wallace, M. D. Acland, A. S. Jacobs, J. E. Stewart, K. D. Graham, J. Atkinson. Dalgety and Co. (Blue and Black)—Huson, Broughton, Weir, Morris, Gregg, Sabiston, Hynam, Evans, Renton, Beanehamp, Moon, Milligan, Hardie, Joseph. Dalgety's lost the advantage of the kick off immediately, and for some minutes Pyne s swarmed on their line. Stevens secured from a scrum and sent Beckett and Powell away Powell cut in, end then passed to Jacobs, who was brought down just if) time. Morris relieved a dangerous situation. Dalgety's retaliated with a snappy rearguard assault, and Gregg and Morris were clear away, but Gregg held on too long and a try was lost. Escott cleared well downfield, and Mulligan had to kick out in a ' hurry to stem a sweeping counter-attack of White forwards led by Jacobs. From a melee at half-way Joseph drove his way through and had no one in front of him when Stevens brought him down with a splendid flying tackle from behind. Pyne's had to force to save. Gregg made a solo burst a few minutes later, but Powell made no mistake with his tackle, and again Jacobs, supported by Graham and Stewart, led the Whites back. In a scramble near the side-line Joseph fell on a shoulder and dislocated it. At this stage Dalgety's were attacking strongly, but the defence of the White backs was excellent and try as they would Dalgety's could not find a gap. Beckett, Stev-
ens, and Powell were especially sound on defence. Play swung up and down the field until half-time without a score by either side.
boon after tho start of the second half Pyne's scored after a brilliant movement. Stevens secured in his own twenty-five, beat two men and passed to Beckett, to Escott, who dashed through a gap and passed to Powell. He was tackled, but passed infield and Jacobs and Stephens dribbled it on for the former to score a fine try. Escott'g kick failed. Pyne's 3, Dalgety'a 0. Pyne's were holding the upper hand for the next ten minutes, and were unlucky in missing at least another try when a forward missed the ball over the line with no one near him. Dalgoty's rallied splendidly and Kenton and Hynam shone in a dribbling rush after the White backs had fumbled and Hynam snapped up and found touch nt the corner, flag. There the packs had a stern struggle, and after four scrums Evans secured and forced his way over under a pile of the opposition. Pyne's 3. Dalgoty's 3. The White backs swung into action, and Powell shot through a gap and passed to Escott, who raced over. He missed the kick. Pyne's 6, Dalgety 3. Dalgety's made a gallant effort to equalise, but tho defence withstood the onslaught, although once when Hynam cut in and sent Hilson away Pyne's had to defend strenuously right on their own line. Just in time Dulgety's were awarded a free-kick in the corner, but Gregg's kick went outside the posts and the game ended: Pyne's 6, Dalgety's3. Mr S. Hollander was the referee. MACKENZIE SUB-UNION.
