FOOTBALLS FOR RELIEF CAMPS.

TO I'JIE EDITOR 07 THE PRZI.B j Sir.—Despite your correspondent's opinions as to the benefits of camp football both to workers and to the boss, the facts remain that the young men in those relief camps are in receipt ot good wages., and they don't play iootoall •to oenetit the boss but for their own enjoyment. When our small boys want to play football they, put their pennies together and buy a ball. Surely these State workers—live camps we were told—could have subscribed 2os for a new ball, instead of requesting the gift of a ball from the Rugby Union. Mr Kennedy meant well, but his energy was misdirected, and in these times of stress to which he considers it necessary to call my attention he can employ his talents to better advantage. There is a principle involved much greater than the value of a football. The commuuity have done well by | those men in; relief camps, and it was decidedly bad form to bother the Pnion for a gift ball. I felt 6trongly that five camps of workers should contain some men who might have protested. and that the more a certain class of workers get the more they expect. There is a growing fraternity who seem only to use their brains to scheme how to beat the boss or to live at the expense of their more industrious fellows. Some of us think the single men in those relief camps are two hishlv oaid. and to solicit gifts on their behalf is ridiculous. Let us try rnther to inculcate in these youncc men the Scout, spirit of self-heln and the sturdy indenendence of our pioneers—Yours, etc.. INDEPENDENT WORKER. July 21st. 1930.
