EMPIRE SERVICE LEAGUE.
MEETING AT AMBERLET. A well-attended meeting of the Empire Service League was held in the library at Amberley. The president (Mr George Winskill) presided. Motions of sympathy with the relativeq of the late Sir Joseph Ward, the late Mr Michael Wilson, apd the late Mrs Margaret O'Brien were passed. The secretary (Mrs Hotchkin) gave A report on the work done in Christchurch and an account of a very interesting visit to the largest factories and business places in Christchurch. Adwimtion was expressed at the very fine goods turned out by some of the factories, samples of some of the gopda being on view, Attention was drawn to a reported shortage of grain for manufacturing foodstuffs, especially oats, for which, it was said, 6a per bushel could be obtained, Members expressed pleasure on being infarened that English motor-cars have English batteries and these can be bought In Christchurch and are of effirman drew attention to the need for using New Zealand-grown timber in New Zealand, Mrs Hotchkin said that there is a good supply of cement in New Zealand, and she asl?ed why so much bitumen ts used for roads when the money PQVia be kept in the country by using cement. Tobacconists had bold her that there is not enough tobacco grown in New Zoaland for the Dominion's requirements. Housekeepers asked to see that the raisins they use are Empiregrown. ... A discussion toipk place as to now to best further new industries. Eighty-nine Christchurch residents and six Amberley residents were elected members of the Canterbury Empire Service League. . The next meeting is to be held at the Chamber of Commerce Christchurch, on Thursday, July 24th, at Ihe ohairmftn congratulated members on the good work they were doing.
