PERSONAL. (spsciiii to thb rsxaa.) GREYMOUTH, July 20. The Rev. Fathers O'Meeghan and McKeon, who have been .visiting Greymouth, returned yesterday to Christchurch. Miss L.O'Meeghan and Mr F. O'Meeghan have left on return to Mosgiel. . The War , Pensions Board, consisting of Mr T. E. Y. Seiddon (chairman), Dr. A. Izard, and Mr J. S. Harper, will arrive from Christchurch to conduct sittings at Greymouth on Monday. Mrs A. F. Donoghue, who has been visiting her sister (Mrs M. J. Fogarty), returned yesterday to Christchurch. Mrs and Miss Chinn (Waitaha) left Hokitika yesterday on holiday, for InverCargilL Sawmills Idle. The timber slump on the West Coast has - been the means of throwing a large number of men out of work in the Kumara district. Already, the two sawmills havg ceased operations, whilst others have iound it necessary to shorten hands.Rugby Football. Owing to the inclement weather yesterday all the West Coast Rugby Union'B fixtures at Greymouth and Hokitika were postponed. , Soccer. The soccer match between Buller and West Coast, for the Peter Dawson Cup, was played at Greymouth yesterday, when, in spite of the weather conditions, there was a good .attendance. Buller, the holders of the Cup, suffered defeat by one goal to nil after a brilliant game. The only score registered .was made by McNeill. It is understood that Canterbury will challenge West Coast for the trophy, the match to take place early in August. Reunion at Brunner. A reunion of old Brunner identities was held yesterday afternoon at Brunner, when about 300-were present at a banquet. Mr J. Smeaton, Mayor of Brunner, presided, and referred to the interest always - engendered by such gatherings. Brunner had at one time been an important coal-mining centre, with a big population. There was no reason why history should not repeat itself, as a mining revival had taken place in the town, and results, already gratifying, showed that the town had still room to expand. The outlook was most promising. The afternoon was spent in speechmaking. In the evening a ball was held to conclude the reunion.

League Football. Owing to the funeral of the late Mr John Vaughan, of Blackball, this afternoon, who was an enthusiastic supporter of the League code, fixtures set down for Wingham Park this afternoon were cancelled. Name Suppressed. A young man, who appeared at the Greymouth Court yesterday,. pleaded guilty to a charge of using obscene language in a railway carriage. He was fined £l. A request by accused that his name be suppressed for the sake of his relatives was granted. On a charge of smoking in a non-smoking carriage defendant was fined 10s. Trout. They will return to Westport on Tuesday. Motor Accident. Whilst descending the hill just outside Black- .11 on Friday night a car containing four men plunged over the bank, falling 50 feet into a gully. The accident is stated to have been the result of the car encountering a patch of loose stone at the top of the hill, just as a tyre blew out, the car becoming unmanageable. Three of the four occupants of the car, who all belonged to the crew of the s.s. Tees, were injured. Joseph Borda, bos'n, received a dislocation of the hip; Roy Whitelaw, steward, concussion; Edward Coglan, seaman, slight concussion; Clarence William Adams, seaman, who was driving, escaped with bruises. The three injured men were removed to the Grey Hospital. The car was • considerably damaged.

Boxing. Last evening the Greymouth Boxing Association staged a fifteen-round bout between Alf Cleverly (New Zealand) 12st 2ilb, and "Tiger" Palmer (Australia), list 131b. Both men stripped in good condition, the former having a slight advantage in weight and height. Frpm the opening, the. boxers got at close quarters. The fight went hard to the tenth round in which an upper-cut from Palmer, to the chin, landed Cleverley on the floor till the count of nine. He rose, but a left hook again floored him for nine. He struggled to his feet dazed and made a lunge at Palmer, but fell. The referee (Mr Prank O'Neill) thereupon stopped the fight and gave Palmer the decision. Until caught on the chin in the tenth round, Cleverley ' had maintained a sound defence, Palmer " being aggressive air through. Kingsiders considered the seventh round the best of the ten, both men giving a good exhibition, though Palmer outpointed his opponent. The professional bout was preceded by three amateur bouts of three rounds each. In these Marsh (Greymouth) 9st 61b, beat Quinn (Hokitika) 9st 51b.
