A NEW AWARD.

MANURE, TALLOW, AND SOAP WORKER^.

A new award has been filed for the Canterbury manure, tallow, and soap workers embodying several changes. A forty-eight hour week is provided lor, to be worked between the hours of 7.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on five days ,pf the week, and on one day of the week 7.30 a.m. and 1 p.m. There are also to be ten days' holidays on full pay in the year. Workers employed shall be paid a* follows:—fallow workers, manure workers (including chemical manure) and acid workers. Is IOJd an hour; chambcrmen ana other workers on continuous Shifts, 2s an hour; and soap and candle workers, Is lOd an hour. Workers on extra shifts will be paid Is an hour in addition, to these rates. Men in charge of extra shifts will receive a further Is a shift Workers engaged m discharging shipments of sulphur will be paid 3d an hour in addition as dirt money. These wages are on the same basis as previously, and only the clauses relating to shifts and general conditions have been amended. Mr A L. Monteith, employees' representative on the Arbitration Court, dissents from the decision as follows: __" l do not agree with the majority of the Court because no allowance has been made to cawals unloading guano and rock phpsohate. Waterside workers get an extra 6d an hour, and storemen get for mixing manures 3d an hour. One witness stated that he could not at» times see his mate who was working in the same truck for dust. One witness put in a statement of wages earned for four weeks and, although he was employed every day for some peri !, and earned overtime, he only averaged less than £3 Is per week The employers gave no evidence and did not deny the figures quoted by the union showing a very healthy financial position. Ido not think *ls 10Jd per hour is reasonable for such casual and disagreeable work." .
