BOOKMAKER FINED.
BETS ON WELLINGTON RACES. A RETURNED SOLDIER. [THB PBBBS Bpeclal flerrtc*/) AUCKLAND, July 12. Found by two detectives this morning taking a large number of bets on tho Wellington races. Stanley Clarke, aged 38, was arrested and taken to the Police Court where Mr Hunt, S.M., fined him £75. The accused pleaded guilty and Detective-Sergeant McHugh said he was a bookmaker with a room in a city building. Detective Nalder and he had visited the premises this morning and found that the accused was taking a large number of bets on the Wellington races. "He is practising in a large way," he added, ''and had about 34 or 35 bets on his book." While the detectives were on the premises someone—evidently an agent —rang up and gave a number of bets over the telephone. Both "doubles" and straight bets were taken. Detec-tive-Sergeant McHugh added that, though the accused had never been in Court before, he had a large bookmaking business. He was a returned soldier and was suffering from a bad leg. In imrjosing the fine Mr Hunt Baid he would take his plea of guilty into account. He allowed Clarke a week to pay.
