NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The fortnightly card social in connexion with the Rangiora Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club was organised by the tennis Bection. Forty-eight players took part, and the prizes were won by Mrs V. H. Pulley, Mrs C. Taylor, Miss M. Harper, and Mr A. J. Parris. Mr and Mrs C. Rands, who have been visiting the North Island, returned to Randleigh, Springbank, yesterday. The results of the guessing competitions at the. North Canterbury Poultry Show were:—Sheep (correct wei ß 80*lb), winner, R. Sinclair, SOilb; sacls of potatoes, correct weight 2001b, winner A. Williamson, 2001b. Bro. A. R. Wilson, N.G., presided over a good attendance at the mee - ing of the Loyal Rangiora Lodge o Manchester Unity Oddfellows on Monday night. A letter of recommendation in favour of a member of the Oamaru Lodge was accepted. Bro. D. G. re was appointed guardian. It was deci o to play a card match against the local Foresters' Lodge. LEITHFIELD. At the annual meeting of subscribers to the Leithfield Library, Mr J. »• Russell presided over a good attendance. The report showed the library to be in a flourishing condition, there being a credit balance of £36 18s, , o which sum it was decided to e^P e £l2 on general literature and £d on standard works. CUST. A musical service was held in &t. David's Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon, a large congregation being present. The programme was contributed by the Eangiora Methodist choir. Mr Lane was at the organ, and the service was much enjoyed. Mr Simmonds thanked the visiting choir for its assistance to a sister churchy A well attended complimentary social was tendered to Mr and Mrs C. B. Forbes on Monday evening. Musical and elocutionary items wore given by the Misses Murray, Barr, and Wayland, and Mr 0. Johnson. Games and competitions were enjoyed by the large company present. After supper Mr Simmonds referred to the many years of service Mr Forbes had given to the Church, Sunday School, management committee, and Session, and said that the congregation welcomed the opportunity of showing its appreciation. Mr John Smith, in a happy speech, referred to his long, association with Mr Forbes, in Church work, and presented him with a travelling rug. The half-yearly summoned meeting of Court Star of Belfast was well attended, the C.R., Bro. R. Bulman, presiding. Two members were reported on the sick list, and their allowances • were ' passed for payment. Several matters concerning the welfare of the Court were referred to the management committee. The balancesheet in connexion with the annual ball showed a small profit. It was decided to add the amount to a special social fund. The election of offioers resulted as follows:—CP., Bro. H. E. A class, ronsistinsr of most of the ladies in the locality, has been formed for lessons in home nursing. Sister D. Christian is in charge and will lecture, and demonstrate once a week in the hall. The firit lecture was held on July 4th, when, notwithstanding unfavourable weather, nearly all the members attended. A committee was formed and Miss Annie Russell was appointed secretary. AKAROA. "A meeting of the Akaroa District High School Committee was held on Monday. Present: Messrs A. M. Kelps (chairman), F. J. Wright, W. E. M. Jacobsori, T. E. McKenzie, Rev. 0. L. Wilson, and Rev. J. C. McCaw. I,he headmaster reported that the average attendance at the primary department for the pa.st month had been 89, and at the secondary department 32. In ref: erence to a request as to when the Akaroa school was first established the Education Board wrote stating that their records showed that the . school was established prior to 1864. The chairman, headmaster, • and the Rev. J. C. McCaw were appointed a sub-com-mittee to make all enquiries in regard to the establishment of the school, for the purpose of celebrating the school's jubilee. Notification of the appointment of Mr Ashman as woodwork instructor was received from the Board Accounts amounting to £9 15s 6d were passed for. payment.

LEESTON. The July meeting of the Leeston School Committee was held on Monday evening, Mr R. Grant presiding. Mr J. L. Saunders, Director of the Division of Dental Hygiene, wrote stating that since the receipt of the inspecting dental officer's report, the Minister for Health had authorised the establishment of a dental sub-base at Leeston school, when the necessary local arrangements were completed. .He was awaiting further advice from the committee, as to the schools that were to be included in tne Leeston area. The committee decided to raise. its share of the cost of the building and furnishing, by : direct appeal to the householders. The headmaster reported that the roll number was 126, and the average attendance 117. It was decided to close the school on August 22nd, the date of the football, basketball, and hockey tournament. SOUTHBRIDGE. The monthly meeting of the Southbridge District High School Committee was held on Monday evening, Mr A. McPherson presiding. The chairman reported that no further progress had been made with the proposed purchase of land by the Government for agricultural instruction. The Department had acknowledged the committee's letter, and stated that the matter was under consideration. The committee accepted an invitation for the pupils to attend the Canterbury Winter Show next month. The headmaster (Mr W. C. Eggelton) stated in his report, that everything in connexion with the school was satisfactory. He asked that a holiday be declared on the date of the School Sports' Association's field day (August 22nd), the final day of the term.

LINCOLN. A meeting of the Lincoln Ploughing Match Association was held on Monday evening, Mr P. V. Bailey being in the chair, when further arrangements were made for the Royal Match, to be held in Mr F. *'W. Carpenter's paddock, at Prebbleton. The president said it was doubtful whether the implement and tractor firms would take such a prominent part at the ploughing matches this season as formerly, owing to the slackness of business. Mr Carpenter reported having collected a number of donations in his part of the district, and said that he hoped to get several more. Other members were asked to complete their collecting as early as possible. The president said he had been assured that a number of outside competitors would be entering for the match, arid that several teams from other districts would be taking part.

PREBBLETON. On Monday afternoon Prebbleton schoolboys played a football match against a combined team from the Tai Tapu and Greenpark schools. An exciting game ended in a draw, each side scoring 9 points. Mr G. Millar was referee.

On Saturday evening Mr and Mrs C. Hands entertained a number of friends at a pleasant card party. A number of interesting games were played, and the highest scores were made by Mrs H. Prebble, Mrs W. Hands, Mr A. Wood, and Mr S. McNally. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs S. McNally and Mr N. Stevens.

The Presbyterian Bible Class celebrated its third anniversary by a social in the Church vestry, when the Rev. G. A. Naylor presided. There were many presont, and a pleasant time was spent in various social diversions; Interesting competitions were won by Mrs G. Millar, Mrs H. Taylor, Miss B. Hancox, and Mr Alan McPhierson. SPRINGFIELD. A football match was played between the Springfield football team and a team of porters and shunters from Christchurch. The Springfield • team won by 30 points to sis. Mr McDonald was referee. Mt. Torlesse and the lcrw - hills are heavily covered with snow. Mrs P. itushton has returned from Rakaia. Mrs Dor ward has returned from a visit to her sister at Oaruaru.* HORORATA. On Monday evening a complimentary social was tendered to Mr and Mrs 0. J. Moriand and family, who are leaving Jlororata alter a residence ox ten years there, during wiucii time they: Have taken' an interest in all' social activities. The attendance testined •to the popularity ol the guests of the evening, .and their departure is much regietted. Mr R. G. Keith referred in eulogistic terms to the departing guests, and asked them to aocept a cheque with the best wishes of the residents of Hororata, and as a reminder of the happy times they had spent together. Mr Moriand was also the recipient of a wallet from the Glenroy Tennis Club as a token of appreciation of services rendered to the club. Mr Owen, on behalf of the Hororata Cricket Club, asked Mr Moriand .to accept ; a fountain ; pen, with good wishes for the future. On rising to respond, Mr Moriand was greeted with musical honours. He expressed thanks for the gifts and kind remarks. During the evening songs were given by Mrs Boyce and Mr Felton, and music for f he dance was supplied by Mrs Bo.vce, Misses H. Maffey. and K. Nejson. °nd Mr Felton. Messrs A. J. Harris and T. Adams were M.C.'s. Mrs P. G Keith will leave for Hanmer to-day. _ _ Mr and Mrs C. Harris, Christchurch. spent the week-end with 'Mr and MrsT- E. Harris, Silverstream. Mr and Mrs 0 J. will leave to-dnv to take up their residence in Christchurch. Miss M. Moriand will enter , the" Karitane Hosnital on Saturday to begin her training as a Karitane nurse. SPRINGSTON. The Methodist Ladies' Guild, at Springston held their monthly meeting in the schoolroom. Mrs A; Hi Fowles presided. The ladies brought gifts of clothing to be sent to the needy. Business in connexion with the Guild was transacted. The W.E.A. travelling library visited the Springston district during the week,, and a number of people availed themselves of the opportunity to, borrow, books.

The Rolleston-Burnham schoolboys played a football match against the Springston-Springston South boys. It resulted in a win for the former by - 6 points to nil. Mr A. C. Barr ably controlled th§ game. The quarterly meeting of the Springston Methodist Circuit was held on Saturday evening, the Eev. A. H. Fowles presiding. The balance-sheet showed an increase on the debit . side, partly owing to two Sunday collections having been diverted from- the circuit fund. It was reported that the foreign mission effort would be held in October. The annual circuit rally was arranged for September 9th. A general meeting of the Springs County Returned Soldiers' Association was held on Monday evening, Lieuten-ant-Colonel J. Stafford presiding. Messrs G. A. Hayden (president), E: S. Wilcox (secretary), and J. Smith (treasurer), of the Christchurch Association, attended. The president said that the executive appointed at the initial-meet-ing, on April ■4th had built up-the AsSo-

ciation financially, socially, and numerically, and considered that its duties were, now discharged. There were up-■ wards of fifty active honorary members, and a further forty men had promised to join. There was. a credit balance of approximately £22. The following committee was set up to make preliminary. arrangements: Lieutenant-Col-' onel Stafford, Dr. Cooke, Messrs D; Marshall, J. Blakemore, A. Barr, and E. L. Neale. Unemployment amongst members .was discussed, and the executive was authorised to deal with any cases that arose. , OKAIN'S BAY. Residents -of Okain's Bay held a very successful, ball to celebrate the opening of the new supper-room. The hall was well filled, and: all present had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Music was supplied by Wood's orchestra, of Christchurch, extras being played by Mrs,L. Bailey (Le Bon's Bay), Mr Reynish (Pidgeon Bay), and, Mr C, ■Holstein. Mr F. Moore and Mr C. Harris were M.C.'s.

The Okain's Bay Road Board have bought a 30cwt motor-lorry with patent lift and metal spreader, to cope with the upkeep of the roads in their district. It is working quite satisfactorily.
