NEW MOTOR DAMAGED.
MISHAP ON WAY TO FIRE. At last night's meeting of the Fire Board Superintendent C. C. Warner reported on the accident to the new Dennis motor when being driven to a fire in Brittan street, Linwood, on June 28th. On turning from Fitzgerald avenue Into Armagh street the driver took too wide a turn, and the machine struck the culvert and telegraph pole and continued across the road, going through the fence and the side of a house owned by Mrs J. Forrester, 196 Fitzgerald avenue. The damage to the house was £ls, and to the motor approximately £4O. An enquiry had been held, and the driver had been fined and otherwise dealt with in accordance with the Board's regulations. The superintendent added: —"Whilst I regret that this accident occurred, it nevertheless demonstrated that the new type of body is much safer for the men when riding, as with the older type the crew would undoubtedly have been thrown in all directions, with certain serious injuries, whereas I am pleased to say that no one was hurt."
The chairman (Mr J. B. Cameron) said that it was fortunate that the engine did not go 60ft to the right, as it would have gone through the window of a house in which was an old lady of 80 who suffered with a bad heart. The possibility was that the shock would have killed her. He also mentioned that the Board having decided to carry the first £SO of damage either to pfoperty or to its plant, was not able to recover from the insurance company.
After a brief discussion the report was adopted.
