PROPOSAL BY EMPLOYERS OP LABOUR. ASSOCIATION TULEGRAMB.) WELLINGTON, July 4. The conference of the Manufacturers' Federation to-day expressed itself in favour of a suggestion that in order to make Anzac Dav one of true significance to all sections of the community, a special fund should be established' for th© benefit of returned soldiers or their dependents on a system of voluntary contributions by those who received payment of wages or salaries for that aay. • A Dunedin remit proposed that m the best economic interests of the Dominion, Anzac Day should be commemorated on the Sunday preceding April 25th. It way further suggested that if public opinior demanded the retention of the present legislation provided for the observance of Anzac Day on April 25th. the Federation should advocate amended legislation to require all employers to pay into a special fund for the benefit of returned soldiers or their dependents the amount that would otherwise be paid as wages or salaries to the whole of their employees for that day. Colonel D. Colquhoun, a member of the Executive of the Returned Soldiers' Association, said that numerous conferences of that bodv had taken a strong view with regard to the observance of Anzac Day. being emphatic that the commemoration should be on the anniversary of the landing. He appealed to the conference not to attempt to interfere with the present arrangement. , ~ , After discussion it was decided to withdraw the remit and substitute the following:- "That this Federation intimates to the Returned Soldiers' Association that it would support proposals by which Anzac L>ay would be made one of true significance to all sections of the rommunitv bv endeavouring to establish a special fund for the benefit of returned soldiers or their dei>endents on a system of voluntarv contributions by those who at present receive navment of wages or salaries for that dav." The resolution was carrieq as representing the view of the conference onlv. and delegates were instructed to submit it to their associations for consideration before it is sent to the Returned Soldiers' Association.
