INCREASE IN PETROL TAX.
MOTORISTS® OPPOSITION,
It is likely that the motoring section of the community will raise a vigorous protest against the New Zealand Counties' Association's recommendation that an extra petrol tax of threepence per gallon should fee imposed, the proceeds to be devoted by county councils on roads other than declared main highways. Mr P. B. Harmap, secretary of the South Island Motor Union, said yesterday that the Union was going into the matter of taxation, and they would be given an opportunity of stating their cage. "We contend that there is no necessity for further taxation on the motorists for roads/' ho added, "and we are preparing a report." Mr B. Falck, of the Canterbury Automobile Association, said that the matter was sub judica as far as the executive of the Association was concerned, but motorists wonld certainly have something to say when they presented their side of the caso. When the Prime Minister was approached before with a request that lid per gallon should be put on petrol he said then that he wanted to hear the motorists on the subject, and representations would be made in, the near future to the Prime Minister.
