OTIRA TUNNEL TRAFFIC IN MAY. If the present rate of progress is maintained, the goods traffic through the Otira Tunnel from Westland to Canterbury will soon exceed 1,000.000 tons annually. This month has easily established new figures, the highest previous total being no less than 10.000 tons lower. For to-day the estimate of 1 the traffic is 4130 tons, which will make the aggregate for the month 71,340 tons, as compared with 56,279 tons in May. 1929. and 61,345 tons in August last year, the month holding the record previously. The heavy demand for coal, coupled with the condition of the Grey bar. is responsible for the huge totals now being compiled.
