Tides. It will be high tide on the beach today at 6.56 p.m., and in the river at 7.10 p.m. Sunday—7.3o a.m. and 7.56 p.m. on the beach; and 8.16 a.m. and 8.40 p.m. iu the river. Seamen's Guild. A meeting of the New Brighton branch of tho Seamen's Guild-was held on Thursday at Mrs Bishop's residence, there being a good attendance. An interesting report from Mr Minty was read, detailing his duties, including hi 3 work in visiting the sick, as missioncr of the Institute at Lytteltou. Tn view of the success of tho previous dance, the committee has decided to hold a similar function at an early ii;: 1 A ''book and coin - ' afternoon will be held at the conclusion of the next meeting. Dance. The South New Brighton Tennis Club's annual danco was held in the Masonic Hall on Thursday evening, and was a distinct suceess. Herb. Walton's orchestra provided enjoyable music. The Mayor (Mr J. 11. Shaw) and Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., patrons of tho club,, were among the guests. During an interval in the evening, Mr Sullivan took the opportunity to congratulate the club on it 3 good record. The ladies present included Misses Winn Cox, Molly Boyland, Avis Paxton, Avis Nuttall, Jean Boyland, Pat. Huline, Carlyne Cox, Jessie Breeze, Mae Wilkinson, Mollio Wilks, Lila Marriot, Edith Bell, Thelma Parks, Millicent G rammer, Margaret Bell, Jean Bishop, Meta Hardy, Shoha Weavers, Clarice Ilulme, Borvs Parsonson, Rita Farland, Irene Boyd, Ellio Burgess, Kathleen Sullivan, Rita Hopkins, Power, Eileen Boyland, Roso Olds, Thelma Herrick, Mesdames D. G. Sullivan, W. Ilulme, and R. Peters.

General. At the next meeting ot' the Works Committee of the Borough Council it is intended to prepare a schedule of work in connexion with unemployment, for tho approval -of the Government. Advice has been received that the Government will subsidiso amounts raised by local bodies for this purpose, and as a result it is considered that tho Council will obtain tho maximum amount possible for unemployment during the winter. At a conferenco which tho Mayor (Mr J. IT. Shaw) attended, a proposal was made that local bodies should co-operato in facing tho unemployment problem. It is considered that by adopting this method and setting up an executive in tho City tho raising of money will be greatly- facilitated. I'ho North Beach and Waimairi Burjjoßsiis' Association and the New BrlghtonlQjeater Progress League have approached tho Mayor, asking him to call a public meeting to hear Mr D. G. ; Sullivan, M.P., deliver an address on the advantages of amalgamation with tho City. Mr Shaw is endeavouring to arrange ono big meeting in Central Brighton, thus obviating the necessity fox Mr Sullivan to address two or three small meetings.

Tho Premier Picture Theatre has been leased, and will bo under now management from Juno 2nd. The New Brighton Municipal Band will givo a concert in aid of local unemployment funds to-morrow evening in tho Premier Picture Theatre.

Forensic Club. It is the intention of the Mayor at tho annual meeting of the New Brighton Greater Progress League ta propose that a debating club be started in tho borough. The indications are that the club will become a strong one in a very short period. In view of Sumner having a well-established Forensic Club, it is considered that a debate might, with advantage, be added to the list of sports which are annually contested. Free Kindergarten. A well-attended meeting of parents and residents interested in the question of a free kindorgarten for New Brighton, was held on Thursday afternoon, Mrs J. Bellamy presiding. Mrs T. Taylor and Miss Hull addressed tho meeting, outlining briefly the work of a kindergarten. After some discussion the following motion was passed: "That a free kindergarten be formed in New Brighton,' and that a committee be set up to join the Kindergarten Association. " The following committee was subsequently appointed:—Mesdames Whitworth, Mulholland, Bellamy, Coddington, Linton, Brookes, and Moses.

Mothers' Union. The monthly nieeting of the New Brighton Mothers' Union wris held on Thursday afternoon, there being a good attendance. Prior to the meeting, a short service was held in St. Faith's Church, the Rev. T. M. Curnow officiating. On behalf of the members, the secretary, Mrs Hockley, extended a cordial welcome to Mrs Curnow, the new president of the. branch. Mrs Curnow suitably replied. A social hour followed, musical items being contributed by members. Songs by Mrs Judge and Miss Ward were greatly appreciated. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames Winney and Bargrove.

NORTH BEACH NOTES.

The North Beach Memorial Hall was woll' filled with a gathering of North Beaeh residents, who met to make recognition of the "public service rendered by Mr E.' . A. M. Leaver tr, North Beach, whilst many old associates of Mr Leavet in the pioneering days of North Beach came from the City for the function. The Mayor of New Brighton (Mr J. H. Shaw), who occupied the chair stated that Mr Leaver had been instrumental in getting a school establsfced at North Beach, and had been chairman of the School Committee from the time the first committee was elected. Mr Leaver had represented North Beach on the Borough Council for practically fifteen years, and was associated with practically every progressive local movement. Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., pre-

sented Mr Leaver with a. well-filled wallet of notes as #• token of the appreciation of the residents of Jilr Leaver'a public services. In doing bo he stated that he regarded Mr Leaver as one ol the most competent of public men, :md one with a wonderful grip of public matters. Miss Irene Leaver was then presented with a beautiful bouquet of violets by Miss Phyllis Norric. Mr A. Florance spoke on behalf of'the North Beach school committee, and Mr Ralph Stringer, for the residents. Mr A. W. Jones recounted some of bis experiences of the early days of the settlement in North Beach, and of his association with Mr Leaver in the formation of the Burgesses' Associatl0 Upon rising to respond, Mr Leaver was greeted with musical honours. Iu thanking the residents for their gift and expressions of appreciation he outlined the history of North Beafeh from the time he purchased his section of land from Mr J. 11. Coatcs in 1910. Miss Leaver also briefly responded. During the evening selections were played by an orchestra comprised of old band associates of Mr Leaver (Messrs T. Dalton, I. Stubberfield, F. Chapman, A. Heath,-F. Turner, and Kirk). Messrs Russell and Wilkinson gave a cornet duet, and other items were contributed by Mesdames Claridge, Knowlcs, Goldman, and Seymour. Borough Work. The New Brighton Borough Council has made a start with tho widening of the Esplanade between Osborno Terrace and Berry street. The Council has de-cided-to fence off the children's playground near the Memorial Hall. The Council also contemplate improving tho parking place on the Esplanade, near the Memorial Hall, and making a sump for fire prevention purposes in Jubilee avenue. Personal. Mr and Mrs W. S. Bussell and family have returned from a holiday at Hanmer. Mrs J. P. Eames is in Lewisham Hospital. Miss Betty Scott, of Jubileo avenue, who is in Christehurch Hospital, is making satisfactory progress after her operation.
