ADVICE FROM THE MnWSTBR;

The Education Department is now giving consideration to the building of the Milne street School—» school which will probably be of concrete, and which will be the tuost up to date in the South Island. The area of the land is about six acres and'it is proposed to erect 14 classrooms, witJj » manual training centre and science room*, the whole to be on the, latest fresh-air principle. The cost is stated to run into many thousands of pounds. On Friday last the Education Board sent a telegram to the Minister for Education (the Hon. H;. Atmore) asking him to allocate grants for certain required works so that the Board would not be compelled to shorten' its works stafi, and thus cause more unemployment. It is stated that considerable numbers of carpenters are out of work at the present tin*. The Minister's reply, received yesterday, was as fo(Jows i—"Cabinet, at my recommendation, has approved grants for the completion of Tng College and the new Technical College at Papanui. 1 hope to advise you shortly regarding the Linwood avenue School additions. Milne street School is at present receiving the Department's attention." Mr D 6. Sullivan aud Mr J. MoCombs, M.P.'s, representatives of the kinwood avenue School district, have received telegrams from the, Minister for Education stating that at his recommendation Cabinet has approved of a grant for the ereotion of two additional rooms of the "Temuka type" at the Lin wood avenue School, also that a grant has been made for the erection of a portable room at the Shirley School At the Linwood avenue School two now classrooms are to be added, and thev will be of the newer type as provided last year,
