USE OF WHITEWASH.

VALUE OF AMMONIA. Seaside houses, where it is possible, are better for a coat of whitewash once a year. It is best to mix the whitewash in an ammonia solution so as to give the clear white appearance desired. The effect of this method is to give a clean and whitened appearance which obviates the glare that salt water limewash is found to give to the surface of plastered walls. The best way to give fixity and clarity to limewash, while robbing it of hurtful glare to the eyes, is to get the ammonia tinting in. a primitive way. If. fresh cow-manure be mixed with water, stirred to the consistency of a thin cream, and left to soak for, say, 48 hours, take one bucket of the resultant ammonia-impregnated solution to three buckets of ordinary water. Mix the necessary amount of lime therewith, and apply to a clean brushed down and non-scaly surface. The result will be that a clean, bright, sanitary and limewashed surface, without glare under the most brilliant sunlight conditions, will oe found to yield comfort to the eyes and a greater permanence than any that could result from the older method of applying hmewash.
