SOUTHLAND'S CAPITAL
CHANGE OF NAME SUGGESTED. (PSKSS ASSOCIATION TILEGEAM.) INVERCARGILL. May 20. The following' recommendation from the Finance Committee came before the Invercargill City Council this evening: '"Phat tho Council take into consideration the suggestion that the name of the city be changed from Tnveroargill to Cargill." Cr. H. J Macalister, chairman of tho committee, said he knew many would oppose the change purely from conservatism. There was ample precedent for the change both near at hand and far distant. Invercargill was not a euphonious name and he understood tho name was ; bestowed In Dunedin as a joke during a banquet at which the Superintendent, Captain Cargill, was present. The name had been put up with by Soutblanders longenough. Cr. C. J. Brodrick conisdered it the most absurd suggestion he had ever heard. "Invercargill is a beautiful name/' said Cr. T. O'Byrne "and I should be sorry to see it ohanged to Cargill." The Council decided to delete the words "from Invercargill to Cargill" from the clause, and in this amended form it was adopted.
