MAIN SOUTH ROAD.
PAVING OF ROLLESTON-RAKAIA SECTION. In view of the stalemate over tho permanent paving of the RollestonRakaia section of the Main South road, the opinion is crystallising in the City that the Main Highways Board should undertake the whole of the financial responsibility. . The principal arguments adduced in support of this contention are the sparseness of the population in tho country affected, its low rateable value, and tho national importance of the highWa Owing to the attitude of the county councils with areas contiguous to the road or in its neighbourhood, the Mam Highways Board is reported to be reluctant to journey to Christchurch to me et their representatives in conference, and negotiations for the reconstruction of this important section of the Picton to Bluff highway are in consequence at a standstill. It is highly probable that support will shortly be forthcoming from an influential quarter for the stand taken by the county councils.
