GERALDINE. The monthly meeting of the Geraldina. Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. Kennedy), end Crs. J.a. lisek, W. A. ehettett; ?."&'.' Logan, ,A. J.'Bell, C. Fire Brigade, .wrote that a 'rifle range ,had Ibeen formed at the station,-end"requested the attendance of the Mayor and councillors at the' opening on Monday, May, 19th. . , The invitation was accepted. Mr G. Manning, secretary of the W.E.A., wrote that he had presented- a report on the : Geraldine summer school to the Association, and it had been unanimously resolved that a letter of appreciation be sent to-the Mayor and councillors thanking .them' for their ■ assistance, and that of the residents ; of Geraldine, so generously given to ..the staff of the summer school, which had gone a long way to make the school the success it had been. The tetter was received. ■• ' ■' The secretary of the Timaru Harbour Beard wrote that the borough's contribution for providing. interest on the loan had been fixed at one-eighth of a penny in the £. The -letter was received. . The Health Officer <Mr Menzies), notified that no cases of infectious' disease had occurred within the borough during the month. The borough ranger <Mr, P. Gaby) reported having impounded five head of stock during the month. A letter was .received for the Aimeru Cancer Research Committee statin* that it had been Agreed to liold a meeting at Geraldine. The Mayor said the meeting had been held, Dr. Talbot and Mr Anglaud attending, and spenMng. A committee had been set up, and • a successful canvass had been started, the women in the back-country especially having taken the matter up en* thusiastically. ". ' ' ' . In response to a letter for the Mayor of Timaru, the Mayor was appointed to represent the borough at a conference at Timaru in connexion with the collecting of heavy traffic fees. . ..... Mrs •E. Price. librarian,. reported that she had taken £6 16s 6d in subscriptions. There had been 794 books issned during. Mm month. Two new subscribers -had joined , for six months. There were enquiries for : ; now books. The report was adopted. , J Mr C. O. Knight, manager of the Town Hall, reported having shown fourteen pie- j hires, and having let the hall on three occasions. Through various' efforts he had raised the sum of £69 6s Bd, pins the sum of £6O previously voted for second-hand seats, making a total of £129.6s 3d. - The matter of extra seating was held over till the estimates were being considered. Cr. Logan, chairman of the Library Com- ( mittee, submitted his animal report on the working of the Library Committee as fol» lows: —The balance-sheet showed -a credit, balance of £Bl 5s «d, ■ eight thousand five hundred and seventy-seven books had been issued during the year. Sherratt, chairman of the Finance Committee, reported that receipts for the month had been £263 10s «4- .Af" connts for payment that meht «»<»»ted -to, £263 10s 9d, and they, had £212 4s Bdm the bank, which left a debit balance of £sl 6s 6d. i. The Domain Board account showed a ; debit of £2 9s 2d, and the Cemetery Board a credit balance of 813 5s 7d. The reports . were adopted. . ■ , , Mr Bert Lord was elected from twentyseven applicants as the Council foreman, and Mi B. Hayes Was appointed, as office boy. The Council sat as a Domain Board, the same members being present. ■ The hon. secretary of the Town and District Association wrote on behalf oi tne Beautifying Committee, who were making additions to the rose garden m the B«nau park, asking the Board to remove the gorse fence from the Speechly gates to the old entrance gate in High street, a distance oi about fifteen yards,.and also one laurel bush. The request was granted. Mr M. B. Hayes, secretary of the Geraldine Football Club, made application for the use of the Oval.No. 2 football ground for his club. . Permission was granted. . -._. At the meeting of the Cemetery Board permission was asked to place tw<r garden seats, the gift of Mrs Margaret Wharton, inside the cemetery gates. -on. • Permission was granted, and Mrs Wharton will be thanked for her gift.
