BANGIOBA. Mrs J. Carr and Miss Tonka (Wellington) are tho guests of Mrs A. Poarce, Mt. Pleasant, Eangiora. At a sitting of the Magistrate's Court before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., judgment for plaintiffs by default, was givon in the following cases:—New Zealand Farmers' Co-op., Assn., Ltd., v. David Giddenß, £8 13s; Thomas J. Griffiths v. Ernost Fulton Campbell, £3 17s lOd; Max Sklaark v. William Donaldson, £1 13s. ' The winter session of the Young People's Society connected with John Knox Church, was opened on Tuesday evening, with a social in the Orange Hall. There was a large attendance, including guests from Oust, Coldstream, and Loburn. Tho evening was spent in games, competitions and music, the programme being under the direction of Mr E. Logan. KAIAPOI. A meeting of the Loyal Kaiapoi Lodge, M.V., 1.0.0. F., was held in the Hilton street hall on Tuesday evening, when Bro. A. Gray presided over a large attendance. On behalf of the Kaiapoi Lodge, the D.D-G.M., f ro - A F. Brown, presented the B\S., Bro. S T. Meuneer, with a handsome dining-room clock as a token of esteem and in appreciation of his services to the Lodge. In reply, Bro. Menneer expressed himself as proud that the should, so value his services. D.G.M., Bro. Gourlay, then took the °PPf>rlunity of congratulating Bro. Archbold op attaining the position of Deputy GJVI. of the New Zealand branch. Speaking in reply, Bro Archbold stated that he felt the honour conferred upon him would not have been possible without tho loyal po-operation of bis friends throughout the North Canterbury district. He thanked those present for their kind congratulations. Expressing his pleasure at the opportunity, the District G.M then presented the retiring D.G.M., Bro S. T. Menneer, with a couch and two easy chairs, in acknowledgement of the work that he had done for the Order, both in and out of thp North Canterbury district. Bro. Menneer had endeared himself to the many mctn r bers of the unity with whom he had come into contact, and had been a rpal force in the affairs of the Order. Bro. Menneer suitably replied. The following toast list was honoured: "The King," "The Manchester Unity," ''The New Zealand Branch," coupled with the "Deputy G.M., Bro. Archbold," "Tho North Canterbury District,'' "Visiting Officers and Brothers." Bro. Archbold, replying to tho toast of the New Zealand branch, exhorted the brothers to increase the strength of the North Canterbury district, and make it the premier district of Now Zealand- In response to the toast pf the North Canterbury District, the District G-M , Bro Gourlay. urged the members to visit other Lodges piore and take a wider interest }n the work of the Order. Ho then introduced the Deputy District G.M., Brp. A. E. B,rown. Tho D.D.G.M. emphasised the remarks of the previous speaker,. After the business pf the evening had been completed, supper was served, and musical items were contributed by Bro. H. Hirst and several visiting brothers, Mr C. Brockelbank acting as accompanist. KAIKOURA. Messrs Stewart (surveyor) and D. Gibeon (engineer) were in Knikoura on Tuesday in connexion with business concerning tho Main Trunk railway. A. Coglo was before Messrs R. F. Pope and A. 0- Renner, J.P.'s, on Tuesday, having given himself up as destitute. He was detained for seven days, pending an endeavour to secure him a position op tho railway works At the Suburban Hall on Tuesday night, the weekly euchre tournament and dance were held, when there was an attendant of seventy people. Miss Irene Mackle and Meadaines P. Keehan and Norrie were equal for the ladies' prizes, with 24 points, and in the play-off Miss Mackle was awarded first and Mrs Keehan second prize, j Mr D. E. Garrett was first with 24, and Mr W. Laugesen second with 23 for the men's prizes. Music for the dancing was supplied by Misses Marquet and M. Wareham. At the invitation of Mrs James Murray, a number of ladies assembled at the Bank house on Tuesday afternoon to extend a welcome to Mrs E. G. Croft, of Beckenham, who is spending the school vacation in Kaikoura. A most enjoyable afternoon was spent in inusjc and song. Pianoforte solos were contributed by Miss Berpie Smith, and vocal numbers by Mrs L. Kennedy and A. B. Clark, Mrs N. Farrant acting as accompanist. Mrs Farrant won an amusing booji-uame competition. A meeting of the Athletic Club was held at the Drill Hall on Tuesday night, when there was a moderate attendance. Accounts amounting to £4O were passed for payment. A discussion tools place regarding the erection of a dressing shed on Takabapga Dpmain, and it was agreed to join jn with the movement. A concert w'll be organised, to take place at the Qaro camp of the Public Works Department, j»ud dances wilj also be held to secure funds for the object in view. It has be<sn decided that the lour of inspection of property in the vicinlty of the Clarence river and back country will not take place -inti! niter the winter. A number of properties are to .be inspected from tho Clarence river A ward, and a recommendation made for the purchasing of land for closer settlement. Should this eventuate there will be a large increase in population <n this centre. A residence is to be erected in Kaikoura for the constructional engineer of the Main Trunk line. On Saturday, Kaikoura ,'ootballurs will mett Waikari seniors and juniors, A dance took place at the band room pn Tuesday night- when ths staff of the Adclphi Hotel arranged a pleasant evening, lyjnny notnltiss wtre introduced, including a plate waltz, which was wop by Mr anq\ Mrs W. Tombs. Musio was supplied by Mr W. Thomas (piano), and C. W Reeves (drums), extras being supplied by Mr 'fob Clark. Mr T. Taylor was M.C. The proceeds will be given to the band fund. WAIPARA. A large meeting of ratepayers of tho Teviotdaje riding was hold in the Waifara Hall last evening. Mr R. W. Lockead occupied the chair. The meeting was called for the purpose of nominat ing a candidate to fill an extraordinary vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr E. Taylor, who has left the district to reside in Woodend. After considerable discussion the nomination of Mr J. G. Whyte, wag unanimously decided upon, During,the evening Mr Taylor gave a resume of his work for the last four years, for -which he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.

SCARGILL. The first of a series of fortnightly j euchre and dance social evenipgs was held on Friday evening, and was wejl attended. The prizes were won bv Miss M. Milne and Mr E. Gardner. Music for the danping was supplied by Messrs P'nrbairn and Gfrejg, and Mr J. was MjC. With the object of reviving the local miniature rifle qlub, which has been inactive for two or three years, a well attended meeting of ojd members and new enthusiasts was held in the hall Saturday eveping. Mr & A. Oreig. ex-captain of the club, presided. It WIS was decided to re-form the club and resume shooting this season if suitable arrangements for a range could be made. The meeting was adjourn**} for a week, whf»n the question of a rapge will again be cpnsidered, and the officers and committee elected. The weather at present is fine and mild, with nor'-west winds. There has be?ti, fortunately, considerable growth, and sowings of wheat ura being pus{ied ahead rapidly. BELFAST, The monthly meeting of the Belfast «Y" branch, held in the Presbyterian Sunday schop), was well attended, Miss, G. Clarke presiding. The meeting opened with a hymn and prayer, a portion of Scripture being read, followed by the reading of the pledge. Mrs Rogers read a temperance fact, and a paper entitled "The Bible and Aiodoration." Two new members were initiated. It was decided that the nuxt meeting take the form of a (social. tP be held in the St. David Sunday schopl room. ASHLEY BANK. An enjoyable short night dance in aid of the basketball club's funds was held in the school recently. Sfusie was supplied by Mrs Breach (Kangiora), and Mr G. Macdonald acted as M.C. Supper was served by the ladies.At a cord evening, held on Tuesday, most poipts were soored, by Miss N. Downing and Mr F. Radburn.
