FORTY-NINE YEARS' SERVICE.

— 1 ' MR G. G. BURNES RETIRES. Mr G. G. Burnes, district manager of the Christcliurch Branch of the A.M.P. Society, was bidden t farewell at a gathering of members of the staff yesterday morning Mr Burnes is retiring after 49 years with the society, and with !u s wife will leave for England and the Continent next week. Mr A. D. Hassa J1 presided over the gathering, at which were present over 30 agents of the commercial and ordinary staff. Mr Hassail said that Mr Burnes had entered the service of the society on May 3rd. 1881, and had remained in it for over 48 years. He had been appointed to Ghristchurcli as district manager in 1917,. and had always shown every. courtesy to the members of the staff, and had taken a keen interest in sport, as well as in the affairs of the society. During his term of office the business of the society m Christchurch had nearly doubled On behalf of those present he congratulated Mr Burnes on his record of service with the society and expressed the wish that he would enjov ,his trip abroad.. Mr W Macßeth spoke on behalf of tho ordinary department, and Mr W Barker for the industrial-department Mr D. F. Murseli.- who has been appointed temporary, district manager, presented Mr Burnes with a wardrobe trunk from the staff. Mr Burnes suitably replied.
