NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN.
CHRISTCHURCH BRANCH. The annual meeting of the Christchnrch branch of the National Council of Women was held last evening, Miss L M. Jamieson being in the chair. The Societies represented were North Canterbury W.C.T.U., Y.W.C.A., Canterbury Women Teachers' Association, ■Canterbury Mothers:' 'Union, Trained ''Nurses''Association, Home Economics AB*ociaitioii, Free Kindergarten* Ass©/«J»*io*i Gitls' Friendly Society, Canteribiwy Club, Women's Brantfh Citizens' Association, HuSociety, and"; Biigby street x vrome»'«'Guild. , ' , „ ■i'i sßegrotat the death of the following members was, expressed:—Mrs W. ffifuaon, a pioneer member of the Na*tibnal Council of Women in New Zealand j Miss Doris Herbert Brown, an Vaatoeiaie member, who lost her life in the Alpine tragedy, and Mr LovellSmith, a valued adviser and friend of ) the branch. It was reported that a letter of-sympathy, had been sent to relatives of the late Miss M. V. Wilson, and Dr. Chilton. - In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, Miss E. M. Cardale spoke appreciatively of the work done by. tho president,' Miss ■%". M. Jamieson, and the secretary, Miss M. A. Trent. She thought that the Society was to be congratulated on the year's work. A credit balance of £3 10s 9d was revealed. The Minister in charge of Mental Hospitals, the Hon. A. J. StalJ.worthy, Wrote in. connexion .with the enquiry as to when the registration of the adult feeble-minded was to be carred out under the Mental Defectives Amendment Act, stating that in the present state of financial depression, the necessary increase in medical staff would not be warranted. In the meantime, ' clinics were doing ascertainment work in the schools, this work, being carried out as rapidly as possible. It was pointed out that suchr.'clinics existed in Auckland and Wellington, but as yet, there, was none in the South Island. The letter was held oyer till next meeting, pending further information. •It was reported that a new branch ■ot the "National, Council had been formed at New Plymouth. It was resolved to send a letter of congratulation. , wishing the branch every success. -The following officers were .elected: President, Miss I. M. Jamieson; vicepresidents: Mrs Fraer, Mrs W. G. Roberts, Mrs T. E. Taylor; hon. secretary, Miss, M. A. Trent; hon. treasurer, Mrs T. Tomlinson; .National; Committee: Mesdames T. E. Taylor, A. I. Fraer, Misses E,. Cardale, E. A. Chaplin, M. A. Trent, and H. K. Lovell-Smith.
