NEW POST OFFICE.
OPENING AT HORNBY. The official- opening of.the new Post Office_at Hornby was celebrated at 10 a.m. yesterday. X representative attendance was present. Mr R. W. Hawke, M.P., outlined the agitation that had been going on ; for some ,timo, and the subsequent petition which was largely signed, asking for a new post office. This petition had been placed before the Prime Minister, Sir J. G. Ward. The Department recognised the necessity for more suitable postal facilities. The Chief Postmaster (Mr Shanks) in declaring the post office open paid a tribute to Mr Still for the efficient manner in which he had transacted the postal business in the past in his,store. He stated that.the Department decided a new post office was required, and he was pleased to be.present to perform the opening ceremony. He hoped the new office would meet the requirements of the district. Mr Shanks, in referring to Miss Herman, said that She need.not be introduced to the gathering as'they were all well aware what an efficient post-mis-trsea she would make. Miss Horman had been in charge of the post office.in Mr Still's store during the past few years. The gathering then adjourned to the Orange Hall, where morning tea was served. , . Speeches were made by Messrs R. WHawke, M.P., Geo. Witty, M.L.C., W. Manhire, and., C. Walker, congratulating and thanking the postmaster and Mr' C. Robinson for their Efforts in securing the new office. In reply Mr Shanks urged the residents to make full use of the new office, and he had no doubt' that in the near future a permanent office and. staff would be authorised. ;
