,_4 NEW iRIGHTON. At a meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council last everting, there were present: The Mayor (Mr J. H. Shaw). Crs. S Bargrove, F. D. Mmreon, J. McCreanor, A. IL. Lam* k. Smith, It A. Stokes, J. Ainswortb, G. W. Bishop, and E. A. M. Leaver. The Mayor stated that tho Poppy Day collection in New Brighton Lao. realised It was decided to write to Mr U. F. Burley, who had drawn attention to the bad condition of tho footways in ltookjood avenue, stating that the matter would be attendod to as soon o« possible. A letter was received from Mr w. a. MaHott, offering to contribute *ll> towards tho coat of the extension of ten chains 01 channelling to a house in Estuary rood. It was decided to reply stating the locality would bo inspected when tho uoxt borough inspection is made. 11 was decided to write to the Conservator ot Forests furnishing a return showing the number of trees planted in 1938, and the number proposed for 1930. It was decided that tho Waimam County Council be approached concerning joining up with Now Brighton in the matter of making spplicaton to the Highways Board to have the North Bsaeb bus road declared a subsidiary highway. Tho Christchurch Drainage Board wrote stating that the report upon a sewage scheme for New Brighton would bo leady in about two months' time. The Publio Works Department wrote torwarding approved plans and specifications for concrete protective walling at Central Now Brighton and authorising the work to bo put'in hand. . Tho Now Brighton Association Football Club wrote applying for permission to take up a collection on three playing faaturdays. The permission was granted. Saturday next was appointed for ™*e»7« 8 inspection, it being decided to hold the borough inspection the following baturday.

SUMNER. • The fortnightly luoetini: of the Sumnw Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr W. MNicholson), Crs. F. C. Cooper. H. W: Harris. C, I. Denham. J. E. Tail. F. H. K. NeviUf>. F. Oldridge, E. F Sandford. and. A. The Gas, Electricity, and Water Engineer reported that gas manufactured dunns the month of March amounted to 1.248.000 aubio feet. The bed of sis retort* had been cloecd until next summer. *?ur e»°trio cookers had been connected . since last meeting, and work has oorauwncod on th» H.T. lines in Kedcliffs from the pumpins •totion to Celia' street. From the combined wclla 3,890,000 gallons of water had bee» withdrawn and delivered to the Shag Roo» reservoir. From this reservoir. 2,870.00j» gallons were delivered to the Upper CMton reservoir for the supply of the high pleasure system. ' The report was received The Mayor reported on representation* recently made to the Minister for Marin* in connexion with the condition of thp Estuary. He said that the change in tb» colour of the sand at Redcliffs owinc to a deposit of mud had been very evident The Minister had givoa very sympathetic attention to the deputation's representations and urged that no time should bo lost in getting on with improvements in the interest* of the people concerned. It was felt that the Harbour Board should be asked to accopt tho responsibility of collecting » rate over a certain area to cover the cost of the proposed work. Any money made available by reclamation work would be a permanent eource of revenue. > ■ ' Cr. H. W. Harris, who was tho othar member of the deputation which conferred with the Minister, moved: "That a conference be called of the local bodies interested —the Christchurch City Council, the Christchurch Drainage Board, the .New Brighton Borough, the Heathcote . County, and the Sumner Borough—to find, definite means of procuring the necessary money, and to get a definite expression of opinion from the Lyttelton Harbour Board as to whethor they would carry out the -work if authorised, by the Marine Department." This wae seconded by Cr. F. C.. Cooper, and the Town Clerk was instructed, to get in touch' with the bodies mentioned, the nam* of the Drainage Board being added to tb» !ißt after mention of the fact that this body was partly responsible for the silting up of the Estuary owing to their work on the Heathcote and Avon river* A letter was received from the Lyttelton Harbour Board stating that two complaints had been leceived from Clifton resident* concerning tho noise made by. outboard motor-boats, and asking the Council if any complaints had been received by then Cr. Sandford: I can sympathise with those residents. Last Sunday week was a regular gala day. Personally I am all in favour of the sport until it begins to interfere with other people's liberty. The average member of the club exercises plenty of car* but there are one or two who do not consider anybody. Cr. Holden: Kesidents say that we ar» frightened, of offending the club by saying anvlbing 1o them. The Mayor: Oh, no; we have discussed it fearlessly before. Cr. Holden: There are only one or two young fools who bring their boats down on top of their cars. I feel like taking out a gun and shooting them. Cr. Oldridge: During the church services on Sunday the noiße is very disturbing. We have our responsibilities to other people and ' their thoughtlessness is not a fair proposition. It was decided to reply to the Board's letter asking them to take action to alleviate the undoubted nuisance, especially on . Sundays. It was also decided to write to tho club drawing attention to the nuisance caused by Sunday racing. A letter was received from Mr P. Dick accepting the position,of honorary custodian of St. Leonard's square. It was decided to write to Mr Dick thanking: him for his public-spiriledness in this connexion.
