SHIPPING NOTES.

The Cygnet is to sail to-night with cargo for Wellington and Koikoura. The Fox ton is to load here to-day for Foxton direct. She is expected to load here for the same port on Wednesday. The Kuku loads at Lyttelton on Monday for Nelson, Motueka, and Mapua, taking cargo also for Collingwood and Takaka.

The Tairoa was an arrival on Thursday morning from Wellington with cargo from Glasgow and Liverpool for discharge. The Regulua is timed to load at Lyttelton on Monday for Nelson, Westport, and Greymouth to the agency of Kinsey and Co., Ltd. The Himatangl la due to-morrow from the north, and loads on Monday for Wellington, Wanganui, and New Plymouth. The Opawa should arrive to-morrow from Blenheim, and takes in cargo here on Monday for Blenheim direct. The Progress is due here on Tuesday from the south. She loads for Wellington, New Plymouth, and Woikato. The Huntingdon, from Liverpool, berthed at Auckland on Thursday morning. She will also discharge at Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Port Chalmers. The Storm is due from Timnru to-morrow, and loads on Monday for Wellington, Picton, and Wanganui. The Calm is expected to load here on Wednesday for Wellington and Wanganui. The Walnui is due on Wednesday from Timaru to load for Napier and Gisborne. She sails via Wellington. • The Walpfata should arrive to-morrow from the south, and loads on Monday for Auckland, via Wellington. The Kurow is to commence loading produce only here on Tuesday for Auckland direct. The Kaimiro is due to-morrow from Timaru to discbargo a part cargo of Westport coal. She loads here for Nelson, New Plymouth, and Westport, and sails via Wellington. The Kartigl is due here on Tuesday from Portland, via Wellington. The Tees fa now to load here on Monday for the Chatham Islands, and sails via Wellington. The Ruahine in now dne at Lyttelton on May 14th from Nelson for loading, and sails later for Wellington, Gisbornc, and Auckland to complete. The New Zealand Shipping Company's pnl-verised-coal burning cargo steamer Hororata is now due at Lyttelton on May 18th instead of tlio 12th. She is from London, via Suva. The Rangitata is due at Wellington on May 14th from Southampton. She completes discharge at Auckland and Bluff, The Shaw. Savill Company adviie that their liner lonic has been delayed- by the Easter holidays, and la now due at Wellington on May 7th to complete loading. She is now scheduled to clear Wellington on May 10th for Southampton and London, vl* the Panama Canal. News has boon received by the Union Company that the Poolfe, from Oreytnouth, arrived at Sydney on Monday. She was to leave again on Thursday for Brisbane, Grafton, Port Stephens, and Ncwcastlo to load for Auckland, Napier, Dunedin, and Blnff. The Shaw, Savill steamer Mania arrived at Wellington early on Tuesday morning in ballast from' Cardiff to commence hor homeword loading. She was to leave again on Thursday for Napier, WBikokopu, Gisborne, and Auckland to complete, and is fixed to sail finally from the northern port on May 16th for London, via Montevideo. The New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Ruahine, which arrived at Auckland on Tuesday from London and Southampton, brought the following passengers:—Saloon: Mr A. FJnkbeiner, Mr S. P. R. Holmes, Mr P, Smiles, Mr D. A. Crowther, R.N.. Miss E.- Humphreys, Mrs M. J. Watson, and 47 third class. Captain D. Urqnhart is in command of the vessel, and Dr. R. S. McArthur is the medical officer. Good progress is being made at New-castle-on-Tyne with the building of the new steamer for the New Zealand Government. It will replace the Tutanckal in the lighthouse service. The new vessel is 220 ft in length and 35ft in wld*h. She will be fitted with twin screws and will have steam reciprocating engines. The boilers will be heated by oil fuel, but the furnaces will be convertible for coal fuel. It is expected that the launching of the vessel will take place early In June. Captain 0. M. Andrews retains command of the Shaw, Savill steamer Mahla, which arrived at Wellington on Tuesday morning .from Cardiff, and his officers are:—Chief, Mr E. Davis; second, Mr M. P. Congdon; third, Mr J. Jackson; fourth, Mr G. Gangwin; chief engineer. Mr D. Robertson; second, Mr R. C. Evans; third, Mr R, M. Gibbs; fourth, Mr J. W. Brew; fifth, Mr M. K. Davis; chief steward, Mr A. G. Glllard;.wireless operator, Mr E. Docker; chief refrigerating engineer, Mr R. H. Rod; second, Mr W. F. Staff. , , ,_ An order for two passenger liners for the Australian service of the Peninsular and Oriental .Steam Navigation Co., Ltd., has been placed with Vickers-Armstrong, Ltd., Barrow-in-Furnes-s. The order for these two ships, which is the largest individual order secured by the Barrow yard during the last ten years, will very considerably relieve the unemployment position, as the work on the ships will absorb an average of approximately 2500 men for nearly two years in Barrow alone. Taking into consideration the Indirect work which will be provided by the supply of materials, etc., from different parts of the country, it may be assumed that the average total number of people who' will find employment from this important contract will be more than double that number during the period that the ships are under construction. The vesßfils. as In the case of the Viceroy of India, will be propelled by turboelectric machinery, manufactured by the British Thomson-Houston Company nf Rucby The boilers will bn of the latest hiirh-pres-sure water-tube type designed by Yarrow and Co., Ltd. The boilers for one ship will be built by Yarrows, and those for the second vessel will be by ViMrers-ArmstroriEK. Limited. The new ships will he lareter and faster than the Viceroy of India, which was delivered to the P. and 0. Company last year.
