r— ♦> NEW BRIGHTON. The fortnightly meeting of the.. New Brighton Borough Council was held last night. Present—The Mayor (Mr J H. Shaw), Crs. F. D; Muireon, E. L. Smith, A; E. JLiawry, E. A. M. Leaver, J. S. AinawortU, J. McCreanor, S. J. B. Bargrove, and R. A. Stokes. The Royal Life-Saving ' Society wrote pointing, out the desirability of appointing as bath custodians only such persons as are qualified life-savers, and suggesting that preference be given those holding higher awards. —Received. The Port and City .League wrote stating that in compliance with the direction of the Prime Minister, the League is calling a meeting of the Mayor or chairman of each contributing body to determine matters appertaining to the establishment of the commission to deal with the question 6f direct access to the sea. The meeting had been fixed for Thursday, April 10th. It was decided that the Mayor should represent the Council at the meeting. The Standing Committee's report contained the following -That ©ertain works asked for by the South Brighton Progress League be given attention when circumstances permit; that certain improvements to streets- and footways of North Beach, asked for. by the North Beach and Waimairi Progress League, receive attention during the ensuing financial year; that a street, lamp be provided at the corner of the Esplanade and Beach road. The report was adopted. The committee recommended the Council to take the necessary steps to apply to -the Loans Board for permission to raise money for the .purchase of the Pier, the erection of salt-water swimming baths, and for road-, making plant The recommondation was adopted.' ; The Summer Programme Committee recommended the Council to adopt the balancesheet, in connexion with the Christmas carnival This showed receipts £298 6s 9d and expenditure (including £75 paid to the South Brighton Gala Committee) £2OB 16s 4d, leav-; ing a balance of £B9 10s sd.—Approved.
