LORD CLARENDON.

NEW GOVERNOR OF SOUTH AFRICA. . (FBOM OUB OWN COEBEBPONDENT.) LONDON, February 20. The following announcement was issued from 10 Downing Street, last night: "His Majesty the King has been pleased to approve of the appointment of Lord Clarendon as GovernorGeneral of the Union of South Africa, in successsion to Major-General Lord Athlone, K.G., whose extended period of office will expire next January." Lord Clarendon will take up his new office in January, when Lord Athlone's term of office ends. When approached by a Press representative at his home, Pitt House, Hampstead, last night, Lord Clarendon said that he had no statement to make.

Lord Athlone was appointed Governor in 1023, and he was due to return to England in January last year, but he was then requested by the Union Government to continue as Governor for two more years. He is' the only surviving brother of the Queen, and both he and Princess Alice are highly popular with all sections of the community in South Africa, both English and Dutch. Lord Clarendon is at present chairman of the British Broadcasting Corporation, a position to which he was appointed in January, 1927, when it came into existence under its charter and took the place of the British Broadcasting Companyi The appointment, which lies in the hands of the Postmaster-General, carries with it a salary of £3OOO a year. Lord Clarendon's salary as Governor-General will be £IO,OOO.

Lord Clarendon was Chief Conservative Whip in the House of Lords from 1922 to 1925. Later he occupied the position of Under Secretary for the Dominions and Chairman of the Overseas Settlement Committee. He is a director of the Eastern and Associated Telegraph Companies.

In 1905 he married Adeline Verena Isabel, daughter of the late Herbert Somers-Cocks and sister of the sixth Lord Somers. His heir is Lord Hyde, who was born in 1906. Lord Clarendon is the owner of the ruins of Kenilworth Castle, one of the show places of Warwickshire.
