TIMARU AND SOUTH CANTERBURY NEWS.

TIMARU. PERSONAL. Mr J. H. Shelker, supervisor of the Postal Branch at Gisborne Post Office, is on a visit to Timaru. Mr V. S. Pointon, Timaru, and Mr Bernard Hughes, of Temuka, have been gazetted as Honorary Child Welfare Officers in their respective districts. Mr E. B. Hudson, who has accepted a position with Messrs E. Hudson and Co., Ltd., Dunedin, has left for the south. ~ » . Mr V. S. Jacobs (Dunedin) is a guest at the Grosvenor Hotel. Messrs E. B. and J. D. Neill (Mount Somers) are visitors to Timaru. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics in Timaru district for March reveal a decrease in the totals for births, deaths, and marriages. Dotails are as follows, the figures for March, 1929, being given in parentheses : Births: Males 15 (19), females 18 (15); totals 33 (34). Deaths: Males 4 (10), females 6 (10); totals 10 (20). Sixteen marriage licenses were issued last month, three being performed by the Registrar. In March, 1929, 21 licenses were issued, three marriages being performed by the Registrar. The quarterly returns for the period ended March 31st yere:— Births: Males 60 (68), females 61 (45); totals 121 (113). Deaths: Males 25 (26), females 17 (22); totals 42 (48). During the quarter just ended 48 marriage licenses were issued and six marriages were performed by the Registrar. For the corresponding quarter last year 51 marriages were solemnised, eight being performed by the Registrar. WAIMATE. On Sunday evening the Waimate Silver Band, under the baton of Mr V. Vincent, gave a concert in Seddon square, when there was a good attendance of the public. Harvest thanksgiving services were celebrated in St. Paul's Methodist Church on Sunday, when the church was beautiful!; decorated. There was a large congregation at each service The speaker at the morning service was Mr Beaumont, of Timaru, and at the evening service. Rev. W. B. Scott occupied the pulpit. St. Augustine's Anglican Church also had a large congregation at both

the morning and the evening services, the occasion being harvest thanksgiving. Rev. Canon Cocks was tht> preacher. At the Salvation Army harvest festival services were also held, the meetings being conducted by Brigadier Macaulav, of Wellington. Mrs H. MacFarlane. of "Waikora,' Waihaorunga, is visiting Timaru, as the guest of Mrs Westmaeott. After a visit to Mrs J. Wilson, at Waibao Downs. Miss C. Woollcombe has returned to Timaru. Mr and Mri E. B Wright, of Coronation street, who have been spending a> holiday at Akaroa, have returned home. . Visitors to Waimate during the week-end included Mr J. W. Mawson, director of Town Planning, and Mr A. H. Bogle.

ORARI. Most of the local farmers have now garnered in their grain, and many have finished threshing. The mills, however, are still busy in the district, and the fine weather permits them to work continuously. Saturday morning was dull and overcast, following * light shower in the early morning, but the sun soon broke through and the day waa bright and fine. # The committee of the Orari Bridge Hall have decided to hold a series, of socials and euchre tournaments during the winter months. These will be held fortnightly. Mr T. Pemberton, who volunteered and joined up with the special police for service in Samoa, is now on his way south, the corps having been dismissed. A well attended meeting was held in Geraldine on Saturday afternoon to launch the Obstetrical Appeal Campaign in the Geraldine district. At the close of the meeting Mesdames G. A. M. Macdonald and W. E. Cook were appointed to organise the campaign in the Orari district, where a canvass will be made this week. Mrs Erie Haultain, Awakeri, Bay of Plenty, arrived on. Saturday to spend a holiday in Orari. where she is the guest of her sister, Mrs F. W. Grayburn. "Thornevcroft," . Mrs R. Taylor. "The Manse," Orari, returns this week after a month's visit to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs Douglas Patterson and family. "Barbarafield." left on Thursday for their new home in Marlborough. GERALDINE. The Parish Hall was filled 'by an audience chiefly composed of women who had gathered in response to an appeal made by Mrs Mowbray Tripp, on behalf of the fund which is being raised to establish a Chair of Obstetrics at Otago University. The Mayor (Mr J. Kennedy) presided. Dr. Irving explained that to obtain the services of a first-class man as Professor of Obstetrics, they would bo obliged to raise a considerable sum of money to endow the Chair. Melbourne paid its professor £2500 a year, and Sydney paid £2OOO. It would be necessary for them in New Zealand to provide a tood salary if they wanted to get a rst-class resident doctor who could devote all his time to the work. The speaker emphasised the importance of the work, and said that a hospital was being built with 40 Beds at Dunedin. Mrs Tripp proposed that a committee be set up to collect funds by a house-to-house canvass. She nominated the medical men and Mesdames John Barker, G. A. Mac Donald, W. E. Cooke. G. N. Feilden, Druromond Sharpe, L. Williams, E. Undnll, W. H. Jackson, J. Kennedy, K. Mackenzie, and A. A. Readdie, as members of it. ' The proposal was adopted.

TEMUKA. Over the week-end the Temuka Presbyterian Church celebrated its golden jubilee, and considerable interest was taken in the proceedings. The Eight Rev. Geo. Budd, Moderator of the General Assembly of tho Presbyte-ian Church of New Zealand attended, and his addresses and sermons w«ri» listened to most attentively. On Sunday the Moderator preached at both the forenoon and the evening service, to packed congregations. A feature of tho celebrations was a singing of anthems by the choir under the baton of Mr H. G. Ellis, conductor. Mr Cyril Davies presided at the organ. Last evening there was a social gathering at which a presentation was made to Mr S. Cain, who has been an older of the church for 50 years.
