Lawson scr. Magistrate's Court. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Messrs D. McLennan and J. Todd, J.P.'s, Donald Cameron, an inmate of the Old People's Home, pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness. Edward Laverty, Master of the Old People's Home, said that the defendant was of good behaviour when sober, but drink was his trouble. Defendant had come to the Home from Ashburton.

Mr McLennan remarked that it was not right that a man from the Ashburton district should become a charge on the ratepayers of South Canterbury. Defendant was convicted and discharged, on condition that he agreed to take out a prohibition crder.

GERALDINE.

BOWLING. The following will represent the Geraldine Bowling Club in the champion of champions rinks at Timaru on February 22nd —C. Stock (s), W. Henry, J. Campbell, and J. Earl., Croquet. The Geraldine Croquet Club held a garden party on their lawns on Thursday afternoon. Stalls were held for the sale of sweets and soft drinks by Mosdamea Rule and Harris; produce, Mesdames W. A. Sherratt and H. Turner; afternoon tea by Mrs H. D. Neutze and assistants. Personal. Miss Rita Mulhern and Miss Duncan have been elected members of the Geraldine fowling Club. The club has now six lady players. Obituary. Mr John Parrel!, whose death was announced yesterday at the age of 67, was a well-known and highly-respect-ed resident of Geraldine in the early days of the borough. He owned the Crown Hotel for some years, and was a member of the Geraldine Borough Council in 1905 and for somo years after. He came to New Zealand 40 years ago, having'been a school teacher in Ireland. He married Miss McShane of Geraldine Plat, and leaves a large family. He was a keen racing man, and owned a number of trotting horses. About 25 years ago he left Geraldine and took up a property at Hinds, which he successfully farmed.

In the fourth round of the Temuka town and country tennis competition, Orari Bridge CJub met Orari Clul) at the Orari courts on Thursday afternoon. a very even game resulting in a win for Orari l.y 81 games to 61 games. The following are the scores (Orari 'Bridge names being mentioned first): Women's singles—Miss 0. Ford lost to Miss N. Wood, 2-6; Mrs F. South lost to Miss K. Muff, 3-6; Miss Pratt lost to Miss H. TEMUKA.

PERSONAL. Miss Lorna Aberley, a former resident of Temuka, but now of Hawera, -who has been spending a short holiday in Temuka. loft for Invercargill on Thursday. Presentation. to his departure yesterday, Mr Douglas Muir, who has been transferred on promotion to the Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch. was met by the officers of the local branch, and presented with a gold-mounted fountain pen. Mr C. L. Fraser, manager, in making the presentation, referred to the good work and cheery manner and integrity of Mr Muir, and said that he had always carried out his duties in the most exemplary manner. Messrs J. M. King and J. E. Trimen endorsed Mr Eraser's remarks, and wished Mr Muir every success in new sphere of activities. Speaking'in reply, Mr Muir thanked his fellow officers for their kind remarks. lie was very sorry to leave, but promotion could not be overlooked. Mr H. Cameron, who has been stationed at Apia, Samoa, fills the vacancy in Tomuka. High School Picnic. The Temuka District High School Committee decided at the meeting held on Tuesday evening not to include a sports programme at their annual picnic which will be held at Caroline Bay next Thursday. The committee bqlieve, from past experience, that the attractions of the Bay are much more interesting and pleasure-giving to the children, than running events which usually comprise the school sports programme. No Water.

The breaks in the new Orari water main still continue, and the two which took place on Wednesday evening were the means of depriving the town of a supply for several hours. This is the first break that has occurred south of the valve that controls the Waihi reserve supply, and consequently this wa9 not available. The Borough workmen completed the %repairs late on Wednesday night, and the water was turned on early yesterday morning. Bulldiiig Activity. The preliminary work in connexion with the foundation of the new Presbyterian Bible Class building is proceeding, and the structure, which is to bo built in brick, will occupy a site midway between the Church and Sunday School. The foundation stone will be laid by the Rev. G. Budd, Moderator of the General Assembly, about the end of March. Good progress is also being made with the construction of the Maternity Hospital at the corner of Allnutt and Cass streets. The building trade generally in Temuka is fairly active, there being a good deal of work on hand. Cycle Race.

Great interest was taken in the cycle road race, which was held at Temuka on Thursday evening, the course being from Temuka to Geraldine, and back, a distance of 24 miles. The road, generally speaking, was in fairly good condition, but there were some very bad patches of rough shingle. There wero about 30 entries, but scratchings reduced the field to 22. The race was most exciting, the leading riders passing the winning post bunched together. The results were as follows:—R. Hawke (2min), 59min l-ssec, 1; P. Hansen (2min), 59min 15 2-ssec, 2; R. Woodham 3; A. Loach (smin), 4. Fastest time was secured by A. Hansen (scr), 58min 17 l-ssec, and second fastest time by E. B. Taylor, 58min 17 2-ssec.

Funeral. Tho funeral of the late Mr Erie Johns took place at Temuka on Thursday. The cortege, which was headed by the Municipal Band and members of the local 1.0.0.P. Lodge, and Football Club, was the longest seen in Temuka for some considerable time. Amongst those who attended were the Mayor of Temuka (Mr T. E. Gunnion), Mr J. Kennedy (chairman of the South Canterbury Power Board), as well as representatives from every section of tho community. The service at the house and at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. H. R. Fell, and the bearers were Bro. G. Harris, P.N.G., Bro. J. Fisher, P.N.G., Bro. T. Wallace, P.N.G., Bro. W. Seeler, P.N.G., Bro. A. Fisher, and Bro. H. Fisher. At the conclusion of the church service at the graveside, the Band played "A Garland of Flowers," after which Bro. Harris read the burial service of the Order, at the conclusion of which the brethren filed past the grave, and dropped sprigs of acacia. The Band, under Conductor Allen, also played "Nearer My God to Thee," when the cortege entered the cemetery. WINCHESTER. The Temuka Town and Country Tennis competition will be advanced a further round on Thursday, when Winchester will play Temuka Presbyterian Club on the Presbyterian Club's courts. The following team will represent Winchester:—Misses M. White, R. South, u. bouth, and G. Anderson, Messrs G. \VapJe, 0. S. Priest, G. Burborough r» i* : i White. Emergencies: Miss I>. Plnlp and Mr N. Robertson. Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., will be a visitor to Winchester and the surrounding districts next Wednesday. The annual meeting of the subscribers of the Winchester Library has been set down for Monday, when the question of rebuilding the Library, or other wise improving it, will be fully gone into. The committee during the past year raised a large sum by means of a bazaar, and it has alsb had a erant from the Hobson Trust.

FAIRLIE. The Parish Hall, Fairlie, was packed on the occasion of the farewell to the Rev. Father Barra, S.M. Father Barra,. who has been parish .priest in Fairlie for the past three and a half years, has been transferred to Australia to join the Marist Mission staff. At the conclusion of the concert Dr J. R. Loughnan, chairman of the committee, made the presentation During Fatljer Barra's term in Fairlie, said the speaker, he had proved himself a very zealous priest and his work in the parish would be lone remembered. Father Barra was a man of great talents and it came as no great surprise that he had been appointed to the mission staff where he,- no doubt, would do great work. In handing Father Barra a cheque from the parishioners of Fairlie Dr Loughnan expressed keen regret at his departure and sincerely hoped he would long be spared to carry on the great work to which he had been appointed. (Applause.) v Father Barra returned sincere thanks for the present and for the kind spirit which prompted it. Dr Loughnan then briefly welcomed the new parish priest. Father Outtrim who responded. 9
