TURF GOSSIP.

Fine weather vm experienced in Dunedin yesterday, and the conditions should again be favourable for to-day's races. Pangolin did not pay up in the Owliiro Hurdle Handicap, and is to be treated to a spell. Craigmore is a newcomer, and has beendoing ing work of late. He will probably be favourite, but Oriflamb, Who will b® better for his first day's race, will cause him trouble. In a strong field of hacks in the Warrington Handicap, Ranelagh, Topere and Salmo Salar appear to 00 a likely trio. It is difficult to go past form in the Jockey Club Handicap, and Queen Balboa and Circulation will again be prominent, white if a faster pace is established over the early part than in the Cup, Glare may be a formidable candidate. The Cup was not run to suit him, as much was teken out ot him in keeping him back over the first half of the journey. Queen Balboa and King Balboa both figure in the acceptances and will be bracketed if both are produced, but it is likely that the latter will be reserved for the concluding ev«nt. Circulation also has a dual engagement, but her task looks easier in this than in the Hariett Cup The issue should be confined to Glare, Queen Balboa, and Circulation. Waving Corn won so impressively on Thursday that sh®_ **a? strong claims in the Flying -Handicap, and Silver Coot and Royal Saxon will also be well supported. A large field will contest the Wajhola Handicap and the first da£s form points to Solmar. who was out » front at six furlongs, and will have benefited by the effort. Quinopal and Meitui also have good prospects. Amongst the two-year-olds engaged in the Hopeful .Handicap Winsome Hind, Compensation, and Cnarmame will attract most attention.

Much interest will be centred in the James Haislett Gold Cup, and there w no doubt that Nightmarch will be at a very short price. The defeat Limerick last year, will probably cause a section of the investor* to extend their support elsewhere. It is hard to select anything .to extend the Ricc«£ ton colt. Paquito and Latin Quarter seem most likely to occupy the minor places. The Meeting will be brought to » close with the Abbotsford Hanaioap, in which the public may show mo«t confidence in Assemble, Waterline, ana King Balboa. Meadow Lark will make his fast appearance at the Dunedin Meeting today in the Flying Handicap, but ho has a solid weight to carry, and mar find it difficult to ooncede «> mica poundage to the speedy opposition. Winsome Hind was not ridden to the best advantage in the Champagne Stakes at Dunedin on Thursday, otherwise she would have made the winner a task much harder. With better treatment to-day she will keep the field busy in the Hopeful Handicap.

Although Amor figures in the acceptances in the Hazlett Gold Cup at Dunedin to-day he is hkely to contest the big handicap, and Count Cavour will represent the stable in the weight-far-age. Amor finished on exceptionally well in the Cup after having a bad passage, and his admirers may feel tempted to follow him up to-day.

Steady rain fell in Wanganui yesterday, and prospects for the conclusion of the Wanganui Jockey Club s autumn Meeting to-day were not good.

trotting notes.

The Trial Handicap at Victoria Park is a 14 mile race on a 2.28 basis, says the Australian Trotting Record. Mr J. T. Barrett, who owns Realm (2.3 4-5) 'recently purchased in New j Zealand a gelding named Monopoly. At two previous starts he failed through being left on the mark. Last week he was backed down to a very short price, starting off scratch. On this occasion he jumped away, and had an easy win, but Solid Brick chased him along to do 2.543, lvetter than a 2.20 gait. This took liim from scratch in a 2.28 race at Victoria Park to scratch in the 3.™ Tramway Handicap at Harold Purls. As a two-year-old Monopole, a full-brother to Cardinal Logan, looked like turning out a good horse, but he trained off. and his later efforts were disappointing. The latest American files to hand publish statistics dealing with the leading sires, and especially interesting is a table setting out a complete list or the season's new 2.10 trotters, arranged under their sires. The "8t is of especial interest to New . Zealanders, for the leading sires have representatives or relatives at the stud in the Dominion. With 19 winners. Guv Axworthy (sire of Guy Parrish. Real Guy, Llewellyn, etc.), is an easy winner, ' liis fastest performer being St. Guv 2.4|. Next on the list »s Arion ' Guv, the full-brother to Guj Parrish, who has eight on the list, and he ties with Peter Volo. Arion Guy has come ranidly to the front as a sire, and of his eight new 2.10 performers, five are only three-year-olds, the remaining three being four years olds. Chestnut Peter, by Peter the Great has seven to his credit, while Belwin (sire of Brigand), Dillon Axworthy (Bire of Travis Axworthy), and The Senator are each represented by six, Dillon Axworthy's number• including the two-year-old First Hanover, 2.9 J. An interesting feature ot the table is that Miss Hanover 2.6*, Just Dillon 2.7 J. Harrison Dillon 2.83, and First Hanover 2.93 are, like Travis Axworthy, out of mares by Peter the Great.

MR C. G. DALGBTY'S STUD.

TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION. Mr C. G. Dalgety has decided to dispose of the whole of bis horses-in-training and brood mares. These will he offered at auction by Messrs Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., in conjunction with Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., immediately after the Easter race meeting. The horses-in-training include Footfall, Star Shooter, and the two-year-olds" Geisha and Spoon, while amongst the brood mares are such famous mares an Stardancer with a oolt foal by Weathervane, Warstep with a filly foal by Weathervane, Limelight with a filly foil by Silverado. Warlove with a filly foal by Weathervane, Star Mist and Spotlight with foals by Silverado and Paperchase.

ACCEPTANCES. i (nIU ASSOCIATION TBLEOBAM.) . DARGAVILLE, February 14. The following acceptances have been received for the Dargaville Racing Club's Meeting:—

WELLINGTON T.C.

TO-DAY'S programme. The Wellington Trotting Club's February Meeting will be held at Hutt Park to-day, and though the fields will bo disappointingly small, the quality of the horses engaged is up to the average and the racing should be interesting. Although the number of Canterbury horses engaged is smaller than usual, there is still a fair representation of southerners, who will add interest to the proceedings. The day's programme is as follows HUTT PARK TRIAL HANDICAP, of 175 govs. 3.59 clfl3s. lin sx. i Direct Red . . scr Somerby . . scr Glenrosßie . . scr D rlft a^ e , • * Marion de Oro scr Brent Zolock . . 48 Matenga • • s ® r The Wellington-owned Brent Zolock is a more than useful type of gelding, and in the same class race as the Hutt Park Trial he was successful last month. Now only 48 yards behind in a small field he will be afforded every opportunity. He looks the most likely to collect the big end of the purse and Soinerbv and Matenga may cause him most trouble. NAI NAI HANDICAP TROT, of 200 sovs. Unlioppled trotters. 1!.52 class, lm sf. Tami'.hine . . scr Writer . . 48 Boneta .. .12 Dolores .. R0 Jock Bingen .. 38 Lady Fan .. <)0 Jock Bingen and Writer will probably be the elect of backers in the Nai | Nai Handic* ), and this pair should fight out the finish. Boneta may prove the best of the remainder. FEBRUARY HANDICAP, of 525 sovs. 4.35 class. 2m. Sonoma .. scr Great Logan .. 24 Zella .. Brr Jolly Pet . . 24 Arikitoa . . 12 Acre • • 48• Wrackeen . . 12 Real Liffht .. 48 Great Logan- raced well at Addington on Saturday last, doing much faster time than he is now set to do in the February Handicap. He looks the best of the field and most opposition may he expected from Wrackcen and Sonoma. RAILWAY HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. 8.51 class. lm sf. Baron Blnnen .. scr Nelnonian .. scr Denver City .. scr 131 Direct .. 24 Glenlnke .. scr Lofrnn's Pride .. 24 Mao Looanda .. scr Native Hero .. 34 Pleaßnnt Wave scr Halmore .. 24 Salient .. ser Sandy Pointer . . 24 A short limit of 24 yards in the Railway Handicap should result in a good race, and even from the back mark Sand,v Pointer looks to have a good chance. Nelsonian is a more than useful sort in L. F. Berkett's stable, Mid he and Mac Locanda should fully extend Sandy Pointer.

SHARPS HANDICAP, of 175 sots. 8.1 class. l|m. Alexia .. Bcr Brent Light .. scr Bessie Haon .. scr Hardiness ~ scr Drift Ware .. scr Oreat Abdallah 24 Matenga .. scr Lady Author .. 24 Royal Iroquois Bor Petronius .. 84 Solitude .. scr Glenlake .. 36 Ptetronius last month showed his ability to travel fast on the Hutt Park track, and his chance looks second to none in the Sharpe Handicap. Great Abdallah and Brent Light should keep him doing his best. WILFORD HANDICAP TROT, of 225 sovs. Unhoppled trotters. 4.48 class. 2m. Mlas Leda . . scr Boneta .. 36 Qufclcflre .. 12 Jock Bingen .. 72 Tamahlne .. 12 Writer .. 64 The form shown in the Nai Nai Handicap will give a good ideft of the prospects in the Wilford Handicap Trot, and if Jock Bingen escapes a penalty he should win. Boneta and Writer should also run well, MIDDLE CLASS HANDICAP, of 225 sovs. 4.45 class. 2m. Denver City .. scr Native Hero .. 12 Nslsonlan ..scr Lydta ..12 Salient .. scr Sandy Pointer 13 ' El Direct .. 12 Wakeflold ..12 Lydia is bound to be well supported in the Middle Class Handicap, and it is hard'to pick one to bent her. Sandy Pointer and Nelsonian will again have to be considered. ELECTRIC HANDICAP, of 260 sovs. 2.60 elass. 11m, Eugene de Oro .. m Zella .. 19 Logan Princess 12 Arlkltna .. 30 Sir Author • .. 12 Real Light .. 80 Sonoma .. 12 Wilma Dillon .. 36 Wrackeen .. 12 The Electrio Handicap looks like providing one of the best races of the day,/ and tne winner is hard to find. Eugene de Oro will be racing over his favourite distance, and Wrackeen has been so consistent that her chances cannot be ignored. Wilma Dillon has so far failed to produce his best form, but he would only have to he on his best behaviour to win. Possibly Wrackeen, Eugene de Oro, and Logan Princess will fill the places.

NOTES FROM WANGANUI.

[THE PBB3S Special Berries.] WANGANUI, February 14. Mr H, E. Connop has been appointed starter for the Woodville Jookey Club's Meeting next week. Piuthair did not start in the Wanganui Cup on account of going very tore, and it is feared that her racing career may be st an end. Paganelli ran half a milo in 48} on the tracks here this morning, and i( the going is not too soft to-morrow on account of the rain, he will go a long way towards winning his second Jackson Stakes. J. T. Jamieson left for Rotorua last night, not waiting for the second day here, However, he lias In the Shade and Treasury again engaged. J. M. Cameron, with The Hawk, also returned home without waiting for the second day. In the Shade, winner of the Wanganui Cup, has proved a good bargain for Mr W. S. Glenn. He was purchased very cheaply as a yearling at the Sydney sales, and amongst hil previous successes was the Auckland Easter Handicap. He proved in the New Zealand Cup that he was able to get a distance, and yesterday he did not giye his opponents a chance over the last halt of the Wanganui Cup. He was produced a very fit horse by J. T. Jamieson, but a lot of the credit for yesterday's win is also due to H. Gray. Not many horsemen would have had the courage or initiative to take a horse to the front in a mile and three-quarter race over five furlongs from home, yet when Oray found his mount going so well, he made full use of the running that was in him. It is a coincidence that tho runner-up in the Cup, Corinax, should also be Australian bred, but in his case he la racing in New Zealand because he is a one-eyed horse, which bars him from metropolitan courses in the Commonwealth'. For a horse that stays well, Corinax shows a lot of speed, and with luek he will soon earn a winning bracket again. The Hawk showed in the Wanganui Cup that he is in good form ,»t present, and although it is reasonable to expect that he will always be troubled by a distance, he cannot be dismissed from shorter races in the near future. Seatown looked as if the gallop in the Wanganui Cup would do hira no harm. He ran a good race, being In the picture all the way, and when next produced will not be/ neglected. Last year. Benzora, after showing promising form around these parts, went north and won a race, paying a good price. Unless he repeats the effort once more on foreign ground his connexions cannot oomplain about tho short price they will receive, for his form is again becoming distinctly promising. _ ... Dolomite, after yesterday s victory, cannot be accused of being an ungenerous horse. Gray took him through where he had hardly room to gallop, and this is_ a true test of a genuine galloper. Dolomite looks a good horse, and now that he has struck form he should be able to hold his own in better company. Gray says that he is tho image of his sire, Pommern, who won one of the War Derbies, only Pommern was a bigger horse. Dolomite has turned out an exceptionally good, bargain. - My Own never looked better than Bhe aid in the Victory Hack Handicap yesterday, and she was unlucky that her rider could not give her more assistance. H. Goldfinch will have the mount to-morrow. My Own sustained a cut on the knee in the race, which has gone down with treatment, and it w hoped that no ill-effects will follow. The Greyspears hftTO not proved good racehorses ear'y. and therefore Joyspear, who is a winner and ran a good race yesterday, ia an exception. Joyspear is only a three-year-old. so he has plenty of time to improve. Cadland was very unlucky yesterday, get. ting a bad spin in the early stages of Mb race. He shows every Bign of maintaining his earlier promise. Arikinui toas improved 8 lot lately, and in the Flying Handicap showed a lot of speed. He was decisively defeated in the finish by Clmabue, .who waß conceding the substantial amount of 341b, but if Arikinui goes on improving he should not be long in winning a race, Moa Bird was a bit unlucky to miss the jump-out in the Flying Handicap, and on tho way she ran afterwards it looks as if she is going to act up to her earlier promise. Bright Glow sweated freely in the birdcage before going out for the Wanganui Cup, and although she ran a good race it is possible that both and at New Plymouth she has been a trifle off colour. The Awapuni trainer L. Knapp seldom visits a Meeting and goes away emptyhanded. He won two races yesterday, one on the flat with Otairi, and the other over hurdles with Democratic. Otairi has proved a good stake-earner for Mr K. McK. Duncan, who had the satisfaction yesterday of defeating both his father and uncle, who started Consent and Ruanui respectively. Habit made her first appearance in open company in the Stewards' Handicap, and was far from disgraced. Had she received a better run she would have troubled the winner. Habit is a fine advertisement for her young sire Thespian. Lotakia and Elicit have been withdrawn from their engagements here to-morrow. A remarkable coincidence in connexion with the presentation of the Wanganui Cup in the birdcage yesterday was noticed by many people. The colours of the winner, In the Shade, are gold, purple, and black chequers, gold sleeves. The cup was gold, and when presented was_ set off by having in it a bunch of purple ribbon. J. T. Jamieson will take a team of ten or twelve horses to Sydney in June. There is a chance that H. Gray may settle at Trentham before long. He has not yet definitely made up his mind. Gray is leaving 'no stone unturned to reach the head of the ladder amongst the winning jockeys. He is out every morning on the tracks waiting for the gates to open antf ride work, and tho result is shown in his fitness and ability to come back just as good as ever he was. J. Barry, who was Injured in the smash up on the first day of the Taranaki Meeting, craoked two ribs and was very badly bruised. He expects to be fit enough to resume riding at the Rangitlkei Meeting. K. Voitre, who broke both arms, is still in hospital at New Plymouth, and apparently one of the limbs has not gone on too well, as i R. Hatch reported yesterday that the doctors had had to attend to !t again. Everybody will hope that the plucky lnfl will make a good recovery. Autopay, winner of tho Juvenile Handicap yesterday, is a half-brother to speedy Will Oakland. He has not done a great deal of racing, so is likely to .improve. Autopay ia trained at Opaki by T. Pritnhard for the Wellington owur, M* X. Z. Aitkw.
