NORTH BEACH LINE.

. -4 REMOVAL OPPOSED. On the grounds that trolley-buses could never cater for the huge amount of beach traffic, and that the saving in upkeep would be lost in revenue, members of the Burwood Progressive Association expressed strong disapproval, at Thursday night's meeting of the Association, of the Christchurch Tramwav Board's proposal to replace the North Beach line with buses. Mr R J. Ecroyd stated that one of the causes of the heavy upkeep of the service was the fact that secondclass rails were laid down from Burwood to the beach. The Board stated, three vears ago. that reconstruction of the line would cost £42,000. Two years tater the cost was stated to be £32.000, and, when the Board decided recently to close the line, the cost of renev : 'icr the tracks was put down at >B.OOO. Mr Koroyd added that the trams should remain for two reasons : (1) To give free access to the seaside; (-j) the trolley-bus system could not handle the heavv traffic, and. in saving on upkeep. the Board would lose in revenue. Tf the residents protested strongly enough, the Attorney-General would probably hold up the matter for a complete investigation. The meeting decided to forward tlie matter to the United Burgesses' Association, with a reciuest that it be taken up on behalf of the residents.
