Tn reply to a question by Cr. A. G. Williams, at last night's meeting of the Heatheote County Council, the County Clerk (Mr J. H. McAuliffe) said that to give a discount for the prompt payment of rates was quite good in theory, but it was impracticable. If the Council gave such a discount it could not do so in respect of the general rate only; the discount must be given on all the rates, special or general. Cr. Williams said that his idea wm that it should apply to the general rate only; he agreed that the matter would be too involved if the discount had to apply to the special aa well as to toe gen«ral rates.
