TIMARU.
PERSONAL. Mr C. M. Benzoin, District Traffic Manager of Railways, is a visitor to Timaru. Mr Steffano Webb (Christchurch) is a guest at the Dominion Hotel. Dr. W. N. Searle (Dunedin) is staying at the Grand Hotel. The Rev. Mr Peterson (Cust) is at present in Timaru.
Picnics. Glorious weather favoured two school picnic excursions to Timaru yesterday. Over 450 pupils, parents, and friends arrived from the Ashburton primary echool, while 773 came from Palmerslon, Otago. Bailway Servants' Society. A ballot for the election of secretary to the Timaru branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants resulted:—Mr W. Sehiedcr 115, Mr W. Hannan 47, informal 1. Magistrate's Court. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Cr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., judgment was awarded plaintiffs by default in the 'following cases:—A. S. Kinsman v. P. P. Cosgrove, £7 ss; A. C. Fahey v. Bert Atkinson, £4 16s; Annie Howie v. James Davies, £4 15s; J. J. Munro v. John Withell Henry, £4 19s; Ralph A. Rodgers v. Robert J. Grant, £24. In a judgment summons case, C. J!. Bradbury was ordered to pay J. Breen £33 18s, in default one month's imprisonment. Thomas Allsup was ordered to pay "William Sinclair £lO 10s 6d, in default •even days' imprisonment. Judgment was given for plaintiff with eosts for the amount claimed in a case in which Thomas Scott (Mr W. D. Campbell) proceeded against George Baxter Pike (Mr G. H. R. Ulrich), in s claim for £4 2s damages arising out of a motor collision.
ACCIDENT. Through his machine skidding on Some loose shingle while passing some cows on the Main Eoad, just north of the Temuka bridge, a motor-cyclist, E. Walsh, who lives at Kerrytown, Jbroke his leg just abovo the ankle. He was attended to by Dr. A. S. Mclnnes, who ordered his removal to the Timaru Hospital. The Domain. The Temuka Domain seldom, if ever, looked so well as it does at present, the whole surroundings being a perfect delight to the eye. The Weather. The typically harvest weather which has been prevailing during the past •week* changed suddenly yesterday, the wind veering from a southerly to east, and several showers of rain fell during the day. Sidey Pairs. The following is the result of' the Bidey Pairs Competition, B Section/ played at Temuka on Tuesday Evening, between Temuka and Ash bury (Temuka names first): — Marshall and Edwards (s) 24 v. Walker and Manning (a) 24. Connolly and McCallum (s) 26 v. Irvine and Simpson (s) 12. Joynt and McLeod (s) 13 v. Edwards and Clark (s) 16. Hope and Dr. Mclnnes (s) 19 v. Johnson and Spring (s) 21. Totals: Temuka 82, Ashbury 73.
WAIMATE. In tho Magistrate's Court at Waihiate yesterday, before Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., Alfred Warren, of Waimate, on a charge of stealing £lO, the property of William Chisholm, at Pleasant Point, pleaded guilty, and was admitted to probation for two years. An order was made for the return of the inoney. The case in which Agnes Meynell proceeded against her husband, Robert William Meynell, on a charge of assaulting her, after a lengthy hearing, was dismissed, the Magistrate remarking that the case did not do credit to either of the parties. A preliminary trial of the new organ just installed in Knox Presbyterian . Church disclosed that the organ is capable of producing a fine volume of Bound, and is likely to prove of great assistance in the church services.
Miss Mary Fitzmaurice, prior to her departure for Cliristchurch, was the recipient of presentations from the employees, customers, and proprietors of the "Savoy." She received a handsome handbag and Xylonite bedroom clock from the customers, a gold wristlet watch from the employees, and a solid leather suitcase from her emplovers. o Glorious harvesting weather is now being experienced, and as a result the work is proceeding rapidly. Mr and Mrs T. Burps, of Christrhurch, are spending a holiday in Waiinate. Mrs D. Macdonajd, who has been Visiting Oamaru, has returned home., Raspberry picking is still in progress in the district, and, owing to the reopening of the schools, some growers are experiencing a difficulty in securing sufficient pickers. A week or two should see the finish of the season.
