FEAST FOR POOR CHILDREN.
A NEW ZEALAND DINNER.
(neit oxm owir co&kcspoxsbmt.)
LONDON, January 8. One thousand Sheffield children were entertained yesterday, at a dinner paid for by school-children and farmers of New Zealand. For a number of years the Christmas dinner was held in the Guildhall, London, but for the past three years the children in the provinces have had the benefit of the New Zealand gift. Last year it was held in Glasgow; the year before Manchester was the centre, and this year Sheffield was chosen. The funds for the dinner, which cost about £3OO, were raised, as on former occasions, partly by collections among New Zealand school-children and partly by the sale of black fleeces given by the farmers. The children were distributed in all parts of the Victoria Hall—in the gymnasium and the lecture hall, upstairs and downstairs, and even in the corri?ors they 8 »t down to their meal, cheering and shouting. They consumed hundreds of meat pies, sacks of vegetables, and an incredible amount of plum pudThe Lord Mayor of Sheffield (Alder«/ai.V?; Beard « l ey) and the Bishop of Shoffiold attended the dinner and spent some time chatting with the children. The dinner was organised by Captain manager of the Church Army Labour and Lodging Home, Sheffield.
