EDUCATION DEPARTMENT'S PAMPHLET.
Some criticism of the Education Department's pamphlet on vocational guidance was made at the annual meeting yesterday of the New Zealand section of the Institute of Chenmts. It v.-as stated that the paragraph dealing with the profession of chemist was misleading, and a committee was set up to draft a concise definition of the necessary educational requirements, with a view to their being placed before the notice of the Minister for Education. Mr A. M. Wright said that the openings for trained and qualified chemists in New Zealand offered a reasonably good opportunity for those who were temperamentally and educationally fitted. The remuneration received for qualified and competent chemists in industry was certainly as high as. and in some cases higher than, for those in corresponding Government and academic posts. The salaries were, approximately -. Demonstrators, £2OO per annum; junior lecturers and demonstrators, alwvit £BOO per annum ; senior lecturers, £4OO to £500; and professors, £9OO per annum. An examination of the position as disclosed in the Public Service Commissioner's classification list for th«» period ending March 31st. 1929. showed that the range of salaries, according to years of service, age. and ran<re of service, was from £llO to £827 on the average. Tn addition it was found from an examination of the estimates that a number of temporary chemists were employed under the direction of the Department of Scientific and Industrial 'Research, trie salaries ranging from £l-50 to £BOO.
