H. Neville, J. F. Bamford, and G. W. Murray, at English Park last Saturday evening was extremely meritorious. This month, on a date yet to be decided, the club will stage another meeting at St. Leonard's square. The departure of A. E. Joseph for South Africa next month will be a severe blow to the club. Mr Joseph has been.with the club since its inception, but he will gain comfort from the knowledge that it is rapidly making itself felt in athletic circles. Mr Joseph has been outstanding in field events, and his place will not be easily filled. Band Concert. Weather permitting, a further band concert will be given from the Pier Rotunda to-morrow at 3 p.m. by the Christchurch Municipal Band, under the conductorship of Mr J. Noble. The programme includes: —March, "Ravenwood"; hymns, "Eternal Father," "Fierce Raged the Tempest"; contest selection, "Semiramide"; March, "Colonel Bogey"; contest suite, "Zamora"; selection, "Parsifal"; concert waltz, "Birds of Paradise." This band is one of the two A grade bands from Christchurch taking part in the Dunedin contest and should be heard to advantage tomorrow. Re-Opening of Schools. The School for the Deaf, the Sumner District High School, and the Redcliffs School will resume on Monday. At the Sumner School several new appointments have been made. Mr R. G. Hampton, an old boy of the Sumner School, who has taken a special course of physical correction classes at Dunedin, has joined the staff. Misses Ivy Oliver and Runa Hall and Mr Lawrence Carpinter, also an old boy, are the rfther appointees. Concert. The success attending the concert held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening in aid of the school and borough picnic fund must have been very gratifying to the promoters. A well varied programme was enjoyed by a verv large audience. Items were contributed bv the Scottish Society's pupils, Master Robert McLachlan, Vlisses E. Coleman, M. Walton, R. Belmer D. Ellis, Kathleen Brewins, M. Watson J. Dickson-JHart-Stewart, Rita Campbell, I. and M. Fowler, Messrs Laurenson, V. Greer, A. Campbell, L. Woodward, K. Suckling, H. Edwards, the Woodward trio, and members of the Avonside Girls' Club. Mt. Pleasant. There has been much speculation regarding the work of three men on the mud-flat near the Mount Pleasant jetty. They are engaged in pulling up the old pipe line from the Estuary well, which now is not used since the new wells are proving so satisfactory. This pipe will be re-laid on the new road to meet the main pipe on the flat near the bridge. On the whole, the hill roads under the jurisdiction of the Heathcote County Council are in good condition even after so much rain. From the Mount Pleasant tea house to Evans Pass the surface is bad and extensive repair work is needed. Next winter it is hoped to effect an extension of the water supply to the Morten Settlement, and this will neces-

eitate building a reservoir just above this part of the hill. To comply with the Government regulations, it was recently found necessary to instal a new transformer at the foot of the hill. The annual inspection ot the county will be held on Tuesday next. Metalling and channelling of the new sub-division is now in progress. The new road has opened up many splendid building sections from which an unrivalled view of the plains and sea can be obtained. To indicate the rise and fall of the tide, a ptake marked up to a height of four feet was driven into the mud, just near the Mount Pleasant jetty some time ago. Judging by the marks thereon, the average depth of water at high tide is about two feet. Borough Affairs. The footpath on Monck's Spur, Redcliffs, was a subject of discussion at this week's meeting of the Council. It was reported that scouring eight or nine inches deep had occurred in many places and constituted a very grave danger. The trouble appeared to result from the action of the stormwater from nearby houses, in the majority of cases, there having been no proVision made for its disposal. During the past week very rapid progress has been made with the work of restoring the Scarborough Boat Harbour protective wall. The gap has now been filled, but a further quantity of rock has yet to be placed in position before the wall attains the required height. Blasting operations have removed many tons of rock for the work, from the foot of the Scarborough Hill road. St. Leonard's Square. The triple mower purchased with money raised by the Sports Association has recently been used with good effect at St. Leonard's square. A small area round the cricket pitch has been cut, and the consequent improvement is very marked. Unfortunately all the trees planted round the park are not doing so well as one would like to see. Some on the south side are badly choked with lupins, and need clearing immediately if they are to survive. Life Saving Club. Teams are at present training for the intermediate championship for the Xewburgh Shield and the Sumner Cup, a seven man event to be decided at Waimairi on February 9th. Various club competitions will be decided towards the end of February. The Lifeboat. The new lifeboat is expected next week and it is anticipated that everything will be in readiness at the Scarborough boat harbour on its arrival. Good Templars. The weekly meeting of the Sumner Pride Juvenile Templars was held in the Methodist Sunday School, Sister B. Sexton acting as C.T. The S.J.W. asked as many members as possible, with their parents, to visit Sydenham, when the shield for the ritual competition would !be presented to the winning temple. j Keen competition for office resulted in j the election of the following:-—C.T., Sister B. The meeting of the Ever Onward Temple, Redcliffs, was held at the residence of the S.J.W., Bro. George Johnson, and C.T. presiding. It was decided to accept the invitation to attend a combined meeting of juveniles in the Hastings street Hall, Sydenham, next week. The A.S.J.W. was welcomed back after her holiday.
