WAIMAKARIRI HARBOUR BOARD.

LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. The Waimakariri Harbour Board met last night. Present: the chairman (Mr J. W. Barnett), Messrs J. Bryden, J. Hirst, H. Rinaldi, K. J. Dunn, and H. Mcintosh. The Kaiapoi Borough Council wrote asking that the poplar trees on the Board's property in Raven street be topped. It was decided to take no action. Blackwells, Ltd., wrote offering to rent the properties of the Board in Charles street formerly leased to the Kaiapoi Shipping and Trading Company. The offer was accepted. It was decided that the lease of Lot 6 (motor garage), Charles street, to Mr O. M. Williams for a further five years be duly signed. The secretary, Waimakariri Power Boat Club, wrote forwarding plans and estimates of the club's proposals with reference to providing improved mooring facilities for the club's boats. It was decided to submit the phn for the Marine Department's approval. Mr L. McAllister reported on soundings taken of the river and bar as follows:—"The soundings were taken on January 27th, one hour before high water, on a very poor tide. The river was in good order from the mouth of the Kaiapoi branch, showing lift to 12ft in the shallowest parts all the way to the bar. In the mouth of the Kaiapoi branch the river had filled in with floods down Stewart's Gully, and showed soundings of 7ft for a distance of a chain and a half. The rest of the branch up to Kaiapoi showed good soundings, 10ft to 12ft. except at the wharf, which showed Bft. The bar was in good order, and showed soundings of Sft Bin one hour before high water on a very small tide. The bar at present runs fairly straight out, and is right over on the south spit. There is also a channel on the north side, but that channel is not so good as the south. Two posts had been erected in line with the bar for direction for future soundings." The secretary said a cony of the report had been forwarded to the New Zenland Marine Underwriters' Association, Dunedin.
