| TIMARU TOURNAMENT I CONCLUDED. | MAYFIELD WINS ORBELL CUP. TO THE FBESS.' TIMAKU, December 31. The annual polo tournament for the Orbell and Amuri Cups, conducted under the auspices of the Pareora Polo Club, was concluded in bright sunshine at the Washdyke racecourse this afternoon. There was a large attendance of spectators. Mayneld, with two wing, carried off the Orbell Cup, a distinct achievement when it is remembered that this was the first occasion on which the Mayfield men have taken part in a tournament. Pareora B (7) 8, defeated Christchurch A (0) 6, and won the Amuri Cup. At the conclusion of the tournament the cups were presented by Mrs Herbert Elworthy. In the Orbell Cup final Mayfield (25) 25J beat Pareora A (8) 25. Pareora attacked vigorously from the commencement of the game and soon had their opponents on their mettle in defence. la the earlier stages frequent scoring by Pareora was a feature, but in the later chukkas Mayfield were marking their opponents well, thus preventing further goals. Pareora did their utmost to overcome Mayfield's handicap, and were unlucky in not making a decisive score on several occasions. In the Amuri Cup match Christchurch B (10) 10 beat Christchurch A (0) 7. The A team put up a great game, but 10 goals was a heavy handicap to make up in a three chukka match. However, they prevented their opponents scoring and compelled them to play a defensive game for the greater part of the match. The most spectacular game of the day was that between Pareora B (7) 8, and Christchurch A (0) 6, in the Amuri Cup contest. Play swept up and down the field, vigorous attacks and counter attacks being a feature. Major Hutton played a great game for Christchurch, scoring five goals. Mayfield was on the defensive for some minutes, play centring in the vicinity of their goal, till Grigg broke away with a fast rush, but overran the ball. Hennessey and Harold Elworthy made a fine effort for Pareora, but the ball went out behind. The chukka ended Mayfield 25; Pareora 15. In the third chukka, Pareora kept up the pressure, but T. Johnstone and Gillies broke away. Pareora reversed the position and H. Elworthy centred for Herbert Elworthy to score. Mayfield 25; Pareora 16. Harold Elworthy made a great run with Hennessey in close attendance, but the movement was foiled by good defensive work. A moment later Herbert Elworthy scored. Mayfield 25; Pareora 17. A fast Pareora attack was led by Orbell, who swept down the line and centred nicely, but the ball was hit out behind. The Mayfield men rallied and Gillies made a smart opening, but could not penetrate the defence.
