NEW BRIGHTON CARNIVAL.

Ideal weather conditions prevailed for the fifth day and evening of the New Brighton Carnival on Tuesday (New Year's Eve). As it was only » partial holiday, there was only a fair attendance during the afternoon, but in the evening the trams brought down many hundreds of visitors, while a large number arrived by motor-car and other means of transport. The several side-shows and other attractions were patronised, while the shops, which kept open till midnight, did a brisk trade. As soon as darkness set in a very fine fireworks display was given from the end of the pier, while the Hew Brighton Municipal Band discoursed pleasing musical items. Yesterday, New Year's Day, broke fine and warm and there was every promise of continuing so. In spite of the many counter-at-tractions numbers of visitors came down by train and other means, and joined in the amusement offering. However, as the day wore on the wind increased, and the skies clouded over, followed at three o'clock by heavy rain. The Carnival was cuickly deserted, and a homeward rush made for the trams and other conveyances by the visitors. Pleasant Point, South New Brighton, with Its many natural advantages and attractions was visited by large numbers of picnickers. When the rain came on, the splendid shelter provided by the close gTowth of pines and other trees in the Pleasant Point Domain, was much appreciated. Here, in addition to the permanent amusements provided for the children, there were fishing, yachting, boating, tennis, and oMier pastimes available for the adult. However, the rain marred the dav's outing.
