TOURNAMENT AT TIMARU.

ORBELL AND AMURI CUPS.

The annual Polo Tournament for the Orbell and Amuri Cups, conducted under the auspices of the Pareora Polo Club, was continued at the Washdyke Racecourse this afternoon. There was a large attendance of spectators, but the weather was dull and overcast, with a fresh northerlv wind.

In the semi-final of the Orbell Cup match Pareora A (8) 16 defeated Christchurch A (0) 8. The match proved most exciting, eaeh Bide scoring eight goals. The game was a keen, hard tussle, both teams combining well. Pareora put up a good game against the visitors, who tried their utmost to overcome the local team's handicap, and the actual goals scored, eight all. was an indication of the even nature of the match.

In the three chukka matches for the Amuri Cup, Mayfield (11) 14 defeated Christchurch 3 (10) 11. The Mayfield team put up a great game, and secured three goals to the visitors one. As a young club Mayfield are making great strides, and their play yesterday gave Christchurch no chance.

Mayfield (11), however, suffered defeat at the hands of Pareora B (7) by 14 to 11. The Pareora team kept up a vigorous attack, and on the few occasions when Mayfield reversed the position they could not penetrate the defence.

Christchurch 1, Pareora 8. From mid-field Grigg again got away, Gould centring, but the defence remained sound. Open play followed till Pareora had a likely opening, but could not penetrate the defence. Fareora continued to press, and a grim struggle ensued in front of Christchurch's goal, H. Elworthy scoring. Christchurch 1, Pareora 9. In the second chukka Elworthy led a fine attack up the field, but he overran the ball and Hutton effected a good save. Pareora continued to press and were unlucky in not scoring. Hutton got away with a great effort, and transferred play to Pareora's end. Hennessey and Elworthy broke away with a fast attack, and again had Christchurch in danger. Gould, Stewart and Grigg came back with a vigorous counter attack, but the movement was hot completed. From a fast attack in front of Pareora's goal Hutton scored, Christchurch 2, Pareora 9. Just as time was called Pareora swept from midfield, and a "concerted attack resulted in Hennessey scoring. The third chukka opened up with a period of even play in the vicinity of midfield, and from a free hit for crossing. Hennessey shot wide. Pareora attacked and the situation looked dangerous, but Gould cleared and put in a great run down the side-line. Christchureh continued with a vigorous counter attack, and Herbert Elworthy scored with a good goal. Christchureh 2, Pareora ■l2. Pareora put up a fast concerted attack, which resulted in Hennessey scoring. Christchureh 2, Pareora 12. Christchureh retaliated and Gould and Grigg swept down the line, Hutton finishing off the movement by scoring from in front of the goal. Christchureh 3, Pareora 12. Harold Elworthy opened up an attack for Pareora at the opening of the fourth chukka, but the ball went over the line. PJay centred in midfield for a few moments, and Hutton then scored for Christchureh from a concerted movement.- Christchureh 4, Pareora 12. Christchureh continued to press, but Pareora cleared, and came back with a rush, Orbell and Harold Elworthy combining in an attack which resulted in the latter scoring. Christchureh 4, Pareora 13. From midfield Hennessey set up a fast solo attack and scored a fine goal. Christchureh 4, Pareora 14. Christchureh retaliated and llutton scored with a fast shot from the corner. Christchureh 5, Pareora 14. In the fifth chukfta, Pareora opened up a fast attack from midfield. Gould effected a smart save, but a moment later Herbert Elworthy scored. Christchureh 5, Pareora 15. Herbert Elworthy, who "was supported by Orbeli, then put up a fine solo effort right up the field, and Hennessey scored. Pareora 16, Christchureh o. Christchureh rallied, and had Pareora on the defensive, but Orbell cleared. Herbert Elworthy led up the field, and a back-hand by Gould was followed up by Grigg, who scored. Pareora 16, Christchureh 6. Harold Elworthy broke away, but the ball went beyond the line. A fine attack was initiated by Grigg and Gould, but the ball again went out. Christchureh returned to the attack, but Hennessey cleared. The chukka ended with Christchureh attacking. In the final chukka a fast spell of open play took place in midfield, till a free hit to Christchureh was hit behind the line. Christchureh continued to attack, but Herbert Elworthy paved. Pareora reversed the position, and Christchureh was hard put to it in defence for some moments. Gould came through brilliantly, Hutton following up to score. Pareora 16. Christchureh 7. McCredie swept right up the field, but Gillies cleared and the chukka ended with the score: Mayfield 12, Christchurch 11. The opening stages of the second chukka were uneventful till Mayfield attacked, and from near the goal Grigg centred for Gillies to score. Mayfield 13, Christchurch 11. Hall opened up a likely Christchurch attack, but the movement was not completed, and the chukka ended with Christchurch attacking, the score being: Mayfield 13, Christehurch 11. In the third chukka Gillies gained a lot of ground for Mayfield, but the defence held. Mayfield continued to press, Johnstone and Grigg putting in some good work which resulted in the former shooting a fine goal.
