PERSONAL. («P«CUL lO THB PM33.1 GREYMOUTH, December 27. Mr Mathew Kennedy, manager of the Wellington Gas Company, who has been visiting his parents, returned to-day to Wellington. Mr Ernest Partridge, Rector of the Hokitika High School, left to-day for Dunedin. Miss Hazel Perry < Hokitika) left today on holiday to "Christchurch. Mrs W. Bone and the Misses Bone (2) left to-day on a visit to Auckland. Mr J. MeDavitt arrived to-day from Christchurch on a visit to the West Coast. Messrs James McKay and F. Sotheran left to-day to take part in the South Island Rifle Championship, which opens at Redcliffs to-morrow. After an absence of thirty-nine years Mr J. H. Heron, of Wellington, is paying a visit to Greymouth. Mr and Mrs C. Stewart arrived to-day from Wellington on a visit to relatives. Weddings. The wedding was celebrated at St. John's Presbyterian Church, Greymouth, yesterday of Edna May, third daughter of Mr and Mrs Arch. MeMaster, Blaketown, to James Allan, son of Mr and Mrs G. Allan, Cobden. The Rev. T. M. Cuttle officiated, and Miss B. Drake presided at the organ. The bride wore a dainty frock of lemon satin, with hat to match, and earried a bouquet of orange blossom and maidenhair fern. She was attended by her sister, Edith, who wore a frock of deep green celanese and carried a shower bouquet. The bridegroom was attended by Mr Horace Anderson. After the wedding the guests were entertained by the bride's parents, when the usual toasts were honoured. Mr and Airs Allan left later for Canterbury, where their honeymoon wifi be spent. The wedding was celebrated at St. Patrick's Chureh yesterday of Edna Kathleen McGurk, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Elmer, Blaketown, to Albert, only son of Mr and Mrs D. Johnson, Greymouth. The bride wore a frock of pale pink georgette, with shoes and hat to tone, and carried a bouquet of Christmas lilies and maidenhair fern. Miss Nellie O'Brien, the bridesmaid, wore a frock of lavender crepe de chine, with hat to match, and carried a bouquet of sweet peas and maidenhair fern. Mr Roland McGurk acted as best man. After the reception Mr and Mrs Johnson left for Christchurch on their honeymoon, the bride travelling in a cherry celanese frock and black silk repp coat, with hat to match. Obituary. The death took place yesterday at the Greymouth Hospital of Mr Thomas Cressey, an old West Coast resident. Mr Cressy, who was 70 years of age, was a native of Christchurch. He came to the Coast many years ago and was in business as a carrier in the Ahaura district for over twenty-five years. In 1920 he took up his residence in Greymouth. He is survived by a widow, four sons, and three daughters. The death of Mr John Hopkins, a well-known member of the Greymouth Port Watersiders' Union, occurred at the hospital to-day. Mr Hopkins, who was aged 54, had been in failing health for some time and spent a lengthy period in the hospital. He is survived by a widow and a grown-up family. Swimming. The Australian swimmers, Noel Ryan and O. Griffiths, made their first West Coast appearance last night at Hokitika. Both gave attractive exhibitions. The results of the various events staged were:— Boys' Handicap, 25yds—Adamson 1, J. French 2. Time, 16sec. Girls' Handicap—H. Ridland 1, L. Staines 2. Time, 17 3-ssee. Men's Dash Handicap, 25yds—J. French 1, A. Adamson 2. Time, 15 l-ssec. Women's Diving Competition—H. Ridland 1, J. Butland 2. Boys' Diving Competition—C. Sanders 1, J. Warner 2. Women's Handicap, 50yds—P. Gilooly 1, L. Staines 2, H. Ridland 3. Time, 42 3-ssee. Men's Handicap, 100 yds—A. F. Cunningham 1, M. Davidson 2, O. E. Griffiths (Anstralia) (scr) 3. Time, 67 3-ssec. Men's Handicap, 50yds—Noel Ryan (Australia) (scr) 1, M. S. McClymont 2. Time, 28 2-ssec. Men's 220 yds Handicap—Noel Ryan did this distance in 2min 31 2-ssec paced by local swimmers. Ryan also ■won the novelty race. Motor Collision. A car driven by H. Sutherland, of Westport, and containing several passengers, collided at the junction of Stafford and Brittain streets, Hokitika, last evening with a motor vehicle driven by W. McMullan. The Westport car capsized, and the occupants had to be extricated by way of the windows. The most seriously injured was a boy named Johnston, who had a finger crushed. The vehicles sustained minor damage. Railway Traffic. One hundred and seventy-three passengers arrived by the express from Christchurch to-day, and 160 left for Christchureh this morning. Buller Railway. About three hundred men are engaged on the railway construction in the Buller Gorge at Orikaka, about three-quarters of a mile along the Lyell road from Inangahua Junction. Forty men are employed on the formation work, which will" connect the line with the rails at Inangahua Junction going to Reefton. K5533
