NEW BRIGHTON GALA.

WET WEATHER YESTERDAY. Yesterday, the second day of the Now Brighton Carnival, wis marred by the downpour of rain early in the afternoon. Large crowds of people were present in the morning, but were quickly away when the weather changed about 2 p.m. Side-shows were forced to close down early, and the beach was soon deserted. Although tiie weather cleared again later in the afternoon and some of the stalls reopened, there was nothing like the crowd which had been present before. The New Brighton Municipal Band, under the conductorship of Mr J. Nuttall, contributed a programme of popular airs in the evening. Athletic sports were to have been held on the beach in the afternoon, but were postponed until Monday on account of the weather. The gala will continue to-day, when the Central Surf, Bathing, and LifeSnving Club will give a demonstration of land and water drill.
