Tides. It wiU be high tide on the beach this afternoon at 1.59 o'clock, and in the river at 3.10 o'clock and tomorrow at 2.49 p.m. and 4 p.m. respeetivelv. Bates. Ratepayers are reminded that all rates are due and payable on or before February sth. After that date unpaid rates a penalty of 10 per cent. North Beach. A meeting of the Waimairi Beach Surf Life-Saving Club was held in the pavilion, Mr T. Papprill, club captain, presiding. There were also present: Messrs J. Alexander, N. Johansen, A. Wilson, and J. L. Scott. The chairman reported that arrangements were well in hand for a gala to be held on January 18th. It was further reEorted that applications for space were eing invited from professional showmen. Arrangements were in hand for holding a mock court. It was decided to draw up a roster of members for patrol duty on the beach, and also to arrange for teams to go into training as soon as possible with a view to entering for the various surf associations' competitions. A plain and fancy dress social and dance arranged by Mrs N. McGillivray was held in the hall. Music was supplied by Mrs Boss Smith. Mr F. J. L. Scott was M.C. Another successful dance in aid of the Gala Society was held in the Peace Memorial Hall. Mr F. Bromley was M.C, and music was supplied by Stamblers Band. Four swings have been made by Mr S. W. Brown, and with the assistance of a working bee have been erected on the Esplanade just south of the Memorial Hall. The timber for the swings was given by Mr W. Keighley. The see-saw has been moved southward. This will enable the children's playground to be fenced in and so protected from motor traffic. The swings have been in constant use since erection. Good weather prevailed on Boxing Day, and in spite of the fact that a carnival was being held at Central Brighton large crowds visited North Beach by tram, bus, and motor-car. During the afternoon the parking place on the Esplanade was crowded. Mr and Mrs T. Dalton, of Tonks street, North Beach, motored to Kaikoura for the Christmas holidays. Mr and Mrs F. J. Lawrence Scott, of Jubilee avenue, left on Thursday for ten days' holiday at Governor's Bay. Mr and- Mrs C. W. Seymour have taken up residence on the Esplanade. Miss Betty Scott, of Jubilee avenue, left on Thursday for the Anglican Bible Class camp at Marton. Mrs H. Jones, of Hastings, is staying with her sister, Mrs W. E. Leverett, Bowhill road. Miss Grace Burns, of Snowdon road, j Fendaltob, has been staying for a few days with Miss Leaver, of Osborne ! terrace. Mr J. Clark, bandmaster Linwood Salvation Army Band, is spending his annual holiday at North Beach. Mr J. L. Scott, jun., of Jubilee avenue, left on Christmas Day to represent the New Brighton Athletic Club at the sports meeting at Wellington.
