BEACH CARNIVAL.

A NEW BRIGHTON EFFORT.

LARGE CROWD ATTENDS.

The New Brighton streets and waterfront bore quite a festive appearance yesterday when the annual carnival commenced in dull but warm weather. Thousands of people from the City and suburbs travelled to the seaside town by motor and by tram. Heavily-laden tramears set "down load upon load of passengers at the pier all the afternoon, and the dense crowd around the host of tents and marquees above the beach promised well for the success of the carnival, which will continue day by day until January 4th. The carnival has been organised by the New Brighton Borough Council and the local sports associations, and its objects, the constructing of municipal golf J' nks » a marine parade for motors and pedestrians, a salt-water swimming pool, and the improvement of domains, are worthy of public support. Although the weather was not ail that could have been desired, the breakers attracted many, and those who were swimming appeared to enjoy themselves immensely. The mam attractions, however, were centred on t e sm street of side-shows above the san< *s> and a great variety of these held the active interest of young and old. A competition for chocolates, m which the participant has to catch small coloured balls in long-handled nets, was - popular, and balloon bursting and rabbit racing also induced many to try their luck.
