The chief interest in the Empir> League's farewell luncheon to Sir James Parr was his personal announcement that his relinquishment of the High C oitim is.siouership would not mean the end of his real and artivity tor the Empire. 'T may confess.'' he said, "that I have pledget! myself to give my time and energies t-o the furtherance of the great cause of Empire free trade, known as free trade within the Empire. It has its difficulties, hut I am convinced that they are not insuperable. The tiling can be done, and I propose to help it all I can. I nm sure that the maintenance of the Empire largely depends on closer and freer commercial relations between the Motherland, the Dominions, and the Colonies. We have not yet scratched the suit ace of the Empire's immense potentialities. 'T think we fail lamentably to make the best use of the great estate whi'h our forefathers bequeathed us,'" he nddes. "I think T can best serve New Zealand and your sorelv-tried industrialists bv staying in tho heart of the Empire and devoting myself to the splendid cause of stabilising the wonderful Commonwealth of British Nation*. I shall next year engage actively in the work of education propaganda, which I wilT continue till the goal is won." Lord Islington, who presided, quoted a friend's remark that Kir James Parr was the best Imperial bagman who ever came to London. He added that Sir .lames Parr's career was a brilliant one, whether regarded in a civic or political light, or finally in Imperial activities. Mr L. C. M. S. Ainerv. who was also present, remarked that seldom was there such a modest disposition combined with such successful bagmanship. Amongst the other guests were Lord Bledislop. T/o-d Clarendon. Sir James Parr announced thnt he would take a brief holiday before devoting his energies to the Empire Free Trade Crusade.
