HEATHCOTE WILLIAMS SHIELD.

CHRISTCHURCH BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL SCORE 371. [THB PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, December 16. The Heathcote Williams Shield challenge match between Auckland Grammar School (holders) and Christchurch Boys' High "School first elevens was commenced at Eden Park this morning in ideal weather. The visitors won the toss and compiled the large, total, for secondary school cricket, of 371 runs. Auckland Grammar School, with half an hour to bat, had lost one wicket for 20 runs when stumps .were drawn. The wicket was all in favour of the batsmen, being fast and true. High School occupied five hours twenty minutes in making their runs. The outstanding performance of the innings was that of L. Fisher, who compiled a splendid 108. Although lacking in inches he possessed a strong drive, while his timing of leg shots was excellent. Only one chance marred his display, a difficult catch to silly square leg early in the innings. W. Brittenden, who opened the innings with Fisher, was also responsible for a sparkling display, his runs being made at a fairly fast rate A. Cobden, who was shaping nicely until he was run out, compiled a breezy 42. A. Jamieson and Watson also gave promise as batsmen, their scores taking very little time to compile. ! The Grammar School bowling lacked sting. The burden of the attack fell •on Atkinson and Munro, who were the only pair to bowl at all consistently. Thf> former sent down 35 overs, eleven of which were maidens, and secured three wickets for 74, while the latter bowled 27 overs, taking four wickets for 124 runs. The ground fielding generally was patchy, with a few exceptions. Dixon, at cover point, was very safe, and returned smartly to the wicket, but stood too deep, and this gave the batsmen plenty of time in which to run a single. Grammar lost Kenshaw just before time, the batsman being smartly stumped when reaching for a slow break from Dawson. During the luncheon adjournment, Messrs J. D. Mahon, headmaster of Auckland Grammar School, and E. E. Nalder chairman of the Management Committee of the Auckland Cricket Association, extended a welcome to the visitors. High School's opening pair, W. Brittenden and L. Fisher, commenced verv cautiously to the bowling of Dixon and Munro. The former was bowling a medium paced ball which swung dightlv, while Munro was sending down a s i o ' w ' break. Gradually gaining confidence, the batsmen commenced to drive beautifully through the covers. After half an hour's play the total stood at 29 Fisher having 16 to his credit. Brittenden quickly ran into the thirties, leaving his partner slightly behind. Fre-' quent changes of bowling did cot trouble the pair, who dcove and sqaarecut with freedom. At this stage Atkinson, who had bowled nine overs including five maidens, for a total of 14 runs, just missed Fisher's off stump with a ball that nipped off fast. Brittenden began to open his shoulders to the

bowling of Renshaw and Atkinson, and brought his score to 50 with two welltimed hooks to leg. Fisher guided Atkinson through the slips for a couple, and helped himself to a boundary off Munro at the other end. The century was hoisted when Brittenden cut a long hop through the slips, the runs having taken 100 minutes to compile. The adjournment for lunch found the pair gtiP shaping confidently, the total being 12], of which Brittenden had scored 70, and Fisher 46. "When play resumed, the slow-break bowler, Munro. was put on with the wind, while Atkinson was brought on at the other end. The latter broke the partnership with his fourth ball, Brittenden being caught at raid-off in attempting to force an over-pitched delivery. Partnered by Cook, Fisher continued to bat nicely, and passed the oO mark with a pretty glance for a brace. Cook impressed with bis free style of batting, taking toll of anything short. However, in playing forward to a short ball from Munro, he misjudged the flight, and was stumped. Parsons did not wait to play himself in, but attempted to hit the bowl ers. The result was a double change in bowling. The change did not trouble either batsmen, both of whom continued to score all round the wicket with clean, crisp strokes. Fisher was particularly successful with a strong full shot, the ball crossing the chalk line repeatedly. He ran into the eighties after being two hours and fiftyfive minutes at the wickets. Parsons slowed down considerably, being content to give the bowling to Fisher. The latter raised his tally to 90 with a fine drive past mid-off, and off the succeeding ball hoisted '2OO on the seore board with a ttoundary to leg. With the total at £OS, Parsons fell to a brilliant .catch by Hamilton. A brace gave Fisher his century, which had taken just three and a half hours to compile. Cobden, who opened shak ily, did not take long to settle down. With cover and on strokes he soon ran into double figures. In spite of rapid bowling changes, the pair continued to force the pace, Fisher making two nice off drives, which reached the fence. In attempting to lift Atkinson, however, he was caught at mid off. Cobden carried on with Hounsell for partner, and runs came very slowly until the afternoon tea adjournment. High School had been at the crease for over four hours, for a total of 205 runs for four wickets. Wickets fell rapidly after the resumption, Hounsell being brilliantly run out after compiling 42. A brief partnership betweeu Watson and Jatnieson temporarily held up the Auckland bowlers, but Jamieson went to an easy catch at square leg, the innings closing for 371 runs. With half an hour to play, Renshaw and Jessup, Auckland's opening pair, attempted to play out time. Hounsell and Cobden took up High School s attack, but conld make very little impression until in the last over Renshaw was smartly stumped off Dawson. Scores:— CHRISTCHURCH BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL.
