When asked on Saturday it he would comment on the letter trom the General Labourers' Union with reference to the Art Gallery site in the Botanic Gardens, the Mayor ('.Mr L K. Arehen said that he had no comment to make and declined to discuss the matter. "The average criminal i« a poor specimen. The young man who breaks down is weak mentally and bodily as a rule." said Mr J. S. Barton. S.M.. at Thursday's sitting of the Soldiers' Hehabilitation Commission at Wellington,

Good progress is being made with the preparation of the new landingground at Green Island, Dunedin. according to Captain M. W. Buckley, 0.C., Wigram Aerodrome, on his return from Invercargill on Saturday. The problem of drainage is at present occupying the attention of the workers and embankments are being built for the purpose of protecting the ground from flood-water. Vivid impressions of Germany's efforts to capture a larger share of world trade were gathered by the Rev. D. C. Bates, who returned to Wellington from Europe last week after attending a conference of meteorologists. There was no unemployment dole in Germany, said Mr Bates. This, primarily, was because there was no unemployment. Even women were working in the fields, and in one ease he saw a woman harrowing with a horse and an ox yoked together. A flight to Nelson and back was made yesterday by Captain J. C. Mercer in the Canterbury Aero Club's Moth, with Mr W. Williamson as passenger. Flying time on the outward trip was four hours 50 minutes, the machine leaving Wigram Aerodrome at 5.2.j a.m. and stopping at Kaikoura for re-fuelling. A very fast trip home was made with the help of a following wind, two hours 40 minutes sufficing for the aeroplane to cover the distance. "The Prime Minister, just before his breakdown, guaranteed that within five weeks work would be available for every one able and willing." saicl Mr W. Nash, Labour candidate' for the Hutt seat, in an address last week. "The Government has done something to redeem its promise, but there are still many unemployed. In carrying out its policy, however, the Government decided to stop the publication of statistics showing the extent of unemployment. The failure to publish the figures will not help, and you cannot solve the unemployed problem by hiding the facts." "The school garden experiments arc proving a special source of interest this year," read a clause in the monthly report of the Agricultural Instructor (Mr Thomas Mathews) presented to the Southland Education Board on Friday. "In the depth test experiment in which pea or bean seeds were sown at depths of \, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 inches, in quite a large number of case's the 8 inch row has shown through the ground as soon as the shallowest sown rows, and in a few cases the 8 inch row was the first up. I am rather interested to see what the pupils will have to say with regard to this experiment." Board members present expressed considerable surprise at the results of the experiment. That his policy of sound and prudent finance had been a factor in the defeat of the Reform Party at the last General Election was admitted by the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister for Finance, in the Coates Cabinet, in the course of a public address at Lower Hutt on Thursday night, says the "Dominion." The aim of the people of New Zealand, Mr Stewart said, should be to see that the finances of the country were kept on a sound basis. The Reform Party had tried to establish a cautious policy in regard to borrowing, jet the United Party had come along prepared to borrow without limit. It was amusing to find the erstwhile critics of his own borrowing policy now engaged on one of far greater dimensions

"The trouble with our fish is that they are not trained to the fly," said a member of the Taranaki Acclimatisation Society executive this week, when another member was describing the method of rearing fish adopted m a certain place in the West of Ireland. The first were sold when yearlings or two-year-olds, but their rearing involved particular diet and training, and the price at which they sold depended a good deal upon their upbringing. They were kept in ponds, and bags of dried flies (at 6s 6d a bag) were imported from South America for training purposes. The flies were thrown on the water, and the fish taught to rise to them. Visiting buyers often made their selections on the attitude of the fish when given an experimental handful of flies. Surprise that such excellent work could be done by a boy without the use of his arms was expressed by members of the Southland Education Board at its meeting on Friday, when the senior inspector (Mr A. McNeil) produced for their inspection the workbook of a boy at the Nightcaps School. This boy, who has been armless since birth, is 14 years of age, and is in Standard IV. In the absence of his arms the boy has developed one foot to such a remarkable extent that it has taken the place of an arm. By holding a pen between his toes he can write and draw lines with dexterity and neatness. In addition he has a good voice and is most popular among his school mates.
