LAWN TENNIS.

SENIOR COMPETITION. UNITED IN THE LEAD. United summed their unbeaten record in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's senior inter-club competition on Saturday, when they defeated CashmeTe, previously also unbeaten, in decisive fashion. United have to meet Avonside in the final round next Saturday, but the latter team, even strengthened by the inclusion of Glanville, should not be capable of extending the leaders. Grass and hard courts were again fully utilised on Saturday for the continuation of the senior, junior A, and suburban tourneys. Avonside and Fendaiton met in the senior grade in addition to the more important game between United and Cashmere, while Linwood had the bye. The match between feeay and Rhodes-Williams was, as many other games in the competition have been, disappointing, neither player giving of anything like his best. Seay appeared to need practice badly, frequent errors allowing hia opponent to push him to three sets. Rhodes-Williams was steady, and played prettily, at times, but his play lacked certainty. The surprise of the day was Dymond's defeat of Patterson in straight sets." Dymond is playing his best tennis now, and is well below his merited place on the ranking list, No. 15. His ground strokes give an impression of solidity which will carry him far in the game, but he can volley decisively when in the short court. He out-drove Patterson. K"sults were:—UNITED r. CASHMERE.
