ACCUSED GIVEN A CHANCE. ASSOCIATION TEUeGRAM.) AUCKLAND, December 14. Thomas Whitnall Churches, aged 27. who was found guilty on a charge of defrauding his creditors by the gift, delivery, or transfer of a motor-cycle, was placed on probation by Mr F. K. Hunt at the Magistrate's Court. The Magistrate, addressing the accused, said: It appears to me that von wronged a girl. She sued you and was awarded £2OO damages. You paid her nothing. The girl's sister applied to the Supreme Court for you to show cause why you should not pay. While that case was being heard you arranged for your petition in bankruptcy to be filed. You will be admitted to probation for three years on condition that von pav the whole of the money to the girl at the rate of £1 per week. If you don't pay £1 a week regularly voii will have broken the terms of your probation, and be sent to gaol for three months. You can calculate how many months you will do if you do not pay.
