SANDERS CUP.

CANTERBURY TRIALS. SECOND WIN TO BETTY. The second race iu the Sanders Cup trials was sailed at Lyttelton oil Saturday afternoon in a tre*h whole-sail easterly breeze, aud resulted in a win tor Betty over Colleen by the narrow margin of one second. The latter was deprived of the win only through her spinnaker carrying away a tew leet from the finishing line, nltor a neck and neck race over the whole ot the second round. The lachting Assoviation decided, when arranging the trials, to sail three races, the winner of two races to be chosen to represent the province. Betty now has two wine, but as Colleen was put out ot the first race through a mishap to a halvard, and lost Saturday 's race only through a similar mishap, the Association mav decide to sail a ! art her race. The course on Saturday was a triangular one, from the Gladstone 1 ier, a run to the Pile Light, a beat to a bnov off Purau Bay, a lead to a buov off "Officers' Point, and a run to the Pile Light, twice around. The crew.s were the same as the previous haturday The race started at A.'M pni. Colleen was first across, but was very slow with her spinnaker. Bettv and Usher crossed in that order ana broke their spinnakers together. Colleen rounded the Light two seconds *i front of Bettv, with I slier lour seconds behind the Kedohffs boat, On the board across to the quarry Colleen managed to keep to weather of Bettv. Usher tried short boards down midharbour. On breaking tacks off the quarry, Colleen still held the windward * position. Usher had stood in towards Diamond Harbour, and passed well to leeward of the others. All worked up off Diamond Harbour and Bettv caught up on Colleen. Bettv rounded 30sec ahead of Colleen, with Usher lsmin further back. Betty and I Usher hoisted leading jibs. The Officers' Point buoy was rounded as follows : h. m. s. ' Bettv 4 2 0 | Colleen 4 2 25 Usher 4 3 45 Colleen and Usher gybed around and came down with tlfeir mainsails to starboard, while Betty carried hers to port. Spinnakers were drawing well on all three. Passing the pier Betty was 31see ahead of Colleen. Usher was badly trimmed, with too much weight aft. She was 74see behind Colleen. The Light was turned at the following times : h. m. s. Betty 4 13 5 Colleen 4 13 3d Usher ... ... 4 15 4 The beat for the weather mark was much the same as on the first round. Colleen improved her position and after a few short boards off Diamond Harbour emerged in the weather position and rounded the Purau buoy two lengths ahead. A good fight followed on the lead, but a change in the slant of the wind enabled both to hoist spinnakers, to the surprise of the spectators. Betty and Colleen continued the fight for position. Nearing the turning mark, Betty just managed to gain the lead, and the buoy was rounded as follows : h. m. s. Bettv 4 45 12 Colleen 4 45 21 Usher 4 47 50 With a difference of only nine seconds both skippers put forth every effort. First one and then the other pressed each other right against the shore, where there was very little wind. Usher was coming up mid-harbour with all the wind. A few yards from the finish Betty was a length in front. Then Colleen caught a good puff, overhauled her, and was running for the line when her spinnaker carried away. She lost way and Betty shipped across, winning by less than a length. The finish was : h. m. s. Bettv 4 54 0 Colleen 4 54 1 Usher 4 56 2
